Default DEFI's - there must be an alternative

I'm after a set of 52mm gauges for the official subaru newage centre pod. I can't justify spending 400+ on a set of DEFI's and all the new autogauge/prosport ones I've seen seem really bright and 'blingy'.

I just want some simple backlit 52mm gauges, not bright LED's. Just the same backlight intensity as the dash. Preferably black faced with green illumination to match the bugeye dash, but not that bothered. As long as they work, dont dazzle me and don't look like I should have a copy of max power stuffed in the door pocket

Suggestions on a postcard, or just in this thread would do.

Cheers
Martin.

I already have a 1 Din pod, just want some 52mm gauges to go in it.
This is the pod - mines just the standard subaru one so I'll get a face plate made to take the gauges. When I can find some that don't blind me lol

You can't go wrong with Autometer, if you want reliable, easy to read, no frills instruments that will outlast your car. Autometer Phantom series are white faces, black markings, red needles and will illuminate green. This fits perfectly with the factory clocks on my MY98 WRX. Whether it suits the later ones I don't know. The only difference is that they don't do the blackout thing at night where only the numbers illuminate - instead the whole face illuminates in a soft green glow. Really mellow and not lairy at all. Autometer carbon fibre series will give you a black face if you want one. In fact in the link you posted above, it's a set of three Autometer carbons that they've got in their Subaru pod.

Autometer Ultra-Lite in MY00.

Do the job IMO. Probably best to get some black face ones if its for a newage.

Why are DEFI's so expensive? I'm sure they have great build quality, well they should for the price. But surely plenty of cheaper gauges offer the same thing.

Because they have a reputation and people will pay that. The DEFI link concept is a good one and their recent HUD on your screen seems like a good idea.

Don't have a problem seeing them at night TBH.

They've got a little light inside and you put a little green sock over the light or a little red sock

The green fits in very well with MY00 dash at night.

Hope that helps.

Got mine from the states off ebay. Got all 4 gauges for under £100 delivered and the dash pod was the most expensive individual part at about £65.

Easy fit too. Theres enough guides on here on how to fit them.

Defis are expensive for the same reason that all fancy Japanese brands are - a bad Yen exchange rate, they have to come from the other side of the world, and people pay 10 times as much for the kudos of having techy Jap gear to go with their Jap motor. The only innovation that Defi had was that link thing, which basically just cuts down on wiring as far as I can tell.

There are any number of good reliable gauges made in Europe and the US that are equal to or better than Japanese gauges. Autometer, Stack, SPA, Smiths, VDO. At least if you pay a lot of money on a Euro/US gauge you know you're getting what you're paying for, not just a name.

The crazy thing is people happily will pay £100 for a mechanical boost gauge if its made by HKS or Greddy, yet balk at paying £40 for the same thing under a non-Japanese name. 'The cult of JDM' I call it. The same applies to suspension, air filters, pretty much everything. You even get exhausts that will sell for a fortune because they have an unknown Japanese name, but they're probably the equivalent of Unipart over in Japan LOL.
