Unhappy Gearbox in my uk300 blew up today

As above pulling away from lights no forwarning noises changed from first to second and bang loads of clunking and loss of 90 % of drive.
Limped into a side street to a gentle banging and crunching on tickover that goes away when i push the clutch.
How much do gearboxes go for ? lol

The (first) one that went sounded exactly like as you describe, noise went when clutch was depressed.

Don't be daft ... there are grease monkeys for that!!

I think £600 is pretty good value actually ...... but, I don't think it was for a rebuilt gearbox!!

More than likely £600 would buy you a dismantle and simple repair costing pennies and re-assembly.

Like said above ... for £600 the gearbox was NOT re-built ... sorry to pop your balloon - but for £600 you don't get much.

For example, in a Micra, the bearing kit is £50.

Sounds about right, dismantle box and replace what needs replacing.

Job done

Unless, of course, the gearbox from an Impreza is a simple removal job?

Yes, but my point being that £600 including strip down and re-assembly would NOT rebuild a Gearbox (not with everything which wears out, replaced!)

None ... but a REBUILT gearbox would be one where all items that have a life are replaced ... gears do not have a life (not in the automotive sense, they last forever)

The box in question here has almost certainly broken all the teeth off 2nd or 3rd gear [ the usual culprits ]. A rebuilt replacement is one answer.

One of our most fast selling products is our rebuilt gearbox with a 6 month guarantee that we offer. 2007 price is £700 + VAT for supply and £900 + VAT fitted.

We don't claim that we have replaced all life expired parts. But, we do comprehensively rebuild them and I do not know of single buyer from here that will claim ever having a problem with one. Cookstar's one, that he bought in May or June has just broken a set of teeth but it has had a hard competition life since it was built and now he is upgrading to a PPG, there will not be another worry about the box.

We lost another one to a second gear failure at Santa Pod about a year ago but once we explained that synchro and bearing failure are covered by guarantee, but not tooth failure under competition circumstances, the buyer understood and paid up [ without a smile but hey! that's life and we parted friends ]

Call me, Mr Terminator, if we can help you.

Hi David,

Are you aware of the latest WRX boxes being any stronger..? I've heard that some improvements were made and given the extra torque of the UK 2.5 PPP this would seem to make sense..

I'm sure you don't actually mean how that came out, do you?

If a part is expired I would expect it to be replaced, yes?

What you are maybe saying is that parts are selectively replaced? To my mind, a rebuilt gearbox would have all the parts that wear out replaced (gears don't generally wear out in the fifetime of the car so could reasonably be left).

Therefore every re-built gearbox would have the same parts replaced for new parts ... every gearbox would be treated the same regardless. This is my idea of a re-built gearbox.

Anything else is just a 'Repaired Gearbox' .... it may be absolutely fine, of course.

Or maybe I am expecting something that doesnt happen anywhere?

The 'latest ' 5 speed WRX boxes appear only to be different in the area of the front drive shafts and oil seals. They have gone over to he one piece type drive shaft that 2005 onwards STi 6 speeders have. Ratios are the same otherwise. We have 2 low mileage jobbies in stock, but have no need to take them to bits as they are extremely low mileage. I cannot think that they will have re-engineered much inside, maybe just a different type of bearing here and there.

If you go back to the earlier type drive shaft oil seal, they fit straight into anything 5 speed Uk-type from 1999 on.

David APi

PSL you are correct, poor choice of words in my earlier post, but I am sure that you all know what I am trying to say..........
