I'm driving 400 miles straight to Scotland, it seems quite a lot of miles and a long time.

When I was looking for a Type-R one of the guys said that the car blew up after doing X amount of miles (and did a lot)..........................

It's hard to believe my car will blow up. And I may sound daft, but I had to ask!

I'm pretty much clueless when it comes techy and stuff......

I would be driving like 70mph all the way there, not breaking any speed limits

Should be fine as long as there are no issues to begin with and you don't give it long periods at very high speeds. It's only like any other car at the end of the day

I took my car to Scoobyclinic other day and they said my car is very clean and it's still got paint or summin underneath *somewhere I can't remember what he said*
But they did say my rockers are leaking, but nothing to worry about apparently, ...yet. (?)

i do 280 miles to Brighton on a regular basis - although mine is a UK model - and i do do a bit over 70mph.

as long as you dont sustain 120mph for a period of time you'll be fine

Its not quite the same as its a Type R which has a close ratio gear box, therefore it will be sitting at highter revs. Think 5th is quite short. Type R's dont make great motorway cars. I also have a Type R V4.

I used to travel to and from Germany on a regular basis im my old MY00, granted it's not a Type R with a shorter ratio 5th gear but still cruised at 100-120mph with no problems whatsoever, so 70-80mph in your Type R for 400miles should cause any dramas!!

I have an STi Type RA and would'nt want to drive that distance.
Especially at high revs for a prolonged amount of time. IMines around 4500-5000 at 80-85mph.

I'm sure Subaru gave some consideration to the face that people might go further than the local shops when they built the car. In short it'll be fine. I'd bet my left nut you could drive the whole way at 100mph and it'll be fine!!

FWIW I drove my STI 5 from Exeter to Edinburgh when I went to pick it up and I was doing a 'real' (GPS) 90mph pretty much the whole way with only two short stops. This is in a car that has an STI-8 intercooler still being fed from an STI-5 undertray (probably a worse situation than standard) and, as it turns out, leaning out at WOT in 5th due to the pump not flowing well enough (both these issues being addressed).

yes - stop worrying and listening to old hat and that engines will blow up just by looking at them..

Oh and if your going up the east side of the UK make sure you go on the A68 from Darlington to Edinburgh... much more fun than A1 and less speed cameras.. although keep your eyes peeled for them at the Scottish Borders!

Had an STi5 Type R some years ago and did several trips from London to Newcastle with no bother at all. (Was not always doing 70mph)....

Only thing that was a little annoying was the droan. Lots of road noise thanks tot he 17" tyres and bit of cabin droan from the exhaust. Car itself was perfect...

Just don't forget the "cool down" period.
On a long trip, whatever the roads you use, you need petrol, a pee, a drink.
You are thinking of that, find a place, pull in and turn off.
I've done it but nowadays remember.
I'm "only" boggo UK turbo.

TAKE THE TRAIN ! my type ra would deafen you going 70 miles to glasgow nevermind 400 !! i brought my new car home from southampton at around 130kmh and no dramas(555 sti ). there shouldnt be any issues as they arent made from chocolate !! if i thought that there would be a problem driving a scooby 400 miles at 90-100mph then i wouldnt have one EVER !!

Perhaps I'm unusual but I like "raw" cars.
I only bought my UK, in '99, 'cos back then imports seemed to have problems with insurance and servicing.
"Raw" cars make you think and concentrate on your driving.

as far as i know the fuel pump is dodgy on standard sti's and they tend to blow towards top end or serious beating...

Just spent the X-mas holidays doing some serious miles, some at over 145 mph for distances of over 200 miles (no traffic, thanks!) with my SW05 and there is nothing big about it, hardly any oil used etc etc.

Thank God I did not get caught by the coppers then!

It's not that I'm afraid of driving 400 miles straight.

It's because I thought the Type-R's are built to a kind of 'sprint'ish..car. Since the gear ratios are shorter, I don't really want to strain my engine. (?) And I just wanted to see everyone elses opinion, is that OK?

You don't have to be an **** about it, really.



Plus I do have break down cover.

Mate no way at all being an **** to you and sorry if sounded that way..........

But being afraid to drive your 7-9k car is mad...........

And don't get me wrong i've blown 4 engines in my subaru ownership over the last 5 years but all owner error down to fueling and mapping and second engines and letting oil run low etc etc.........

Dude it's a car, it is made for driving miles and miles!
I spank the crap out of every car I have and have had, and if it breaks, "they" pay!

The more fast miles I put into my Scooby the happier it gets, and I should guess the same for a Type R, mate!

Don't worry about it.
I fly planes that sometimes have been flying for nearly 24 hours straight and it is a walk in the park, like the first flight of the day!

@bosan......... but explainable............. Twicedown to jap ECU and fueling............ Once down to low oil and me driving **** outta it........ Now i may add it was just above low mark... subarus don't like anywhere below the high/low halfway point....
And 4th was with a engine out of a rolled STi2..... Obviously bearings ran upside down or something and went after 900 miles.........

I'm sure I don't need to say but check of fluid levels and tyre pressures before the "journey into the unknown" would be wise.
