I would tax heavily:-
Big 4x4's - charge them £2000 a year
Modified cars running with no CAT - £3000 a year
I would tax CockLinks - £500 each [anyone daft enough with their money to buy such tat may as well help the hospitals!]
And I would add car tax to petrol - 10p a litre

I drive what is classed as a 4x4 ( Navara pick -up ) even though you drive it in 2wd all the time as 4wd lock the diffs, I use it for work and need it for work so why should i pay a silly amount of money just to get to work Mind you whatever they tax me i will just claim against my company and hopefully ease my 80k tax bill

Tax and spend I'm afraid, it is in their blood. It's not their money so they don't care. How much did they spend of our hard earned cash on that 'asset freezing department'? £60 million. I rest my case!!!

My car legally doesnt required a catalyst, when it went for it's mot last year the dvla linked computer system stated "non-cat test" it only has to meet the basic pre-catalyst limits of circa 3.5% CO and 1200ppm HC, so get it round you

I've signed it; way I figure is that it can't do any harm. Better than just moaning about it down the pub anyway.
They're not expecting anyone to go and protest outside the houses of parliament for months, after all!

Martin2005, how may we better off if they don't reduce fuel prices or do away with the vehicle tax, this is a charge on top isn't it

if you have a box monitoring your position and time of day that will replace petrol and road tax.
Some people end up quite a bit better off, and some (mainly white van type people - high mileage) are worse off.
Its a fairer way in my eyes, but its how they use the information.
When you look at speed cameras and their introduction there are some changes over the past few years that go against the initial rules.
only in a dangerous area - blindspots etc.
not to make money etc.
the government changed the rules and put them up all over the shop.
i worry that the initial concept will state:
"only to be used for tax"
but in the long run they will change the rules and we will all find ourselves getting points for speeding via a satelite in the sky!
I think they should look at removing people from the road, scrap more illegal cars, no tax or insurance they scrap it, no questions asked. No licence then your doing some demeaning job, get old unsafe cars off the road too!

Because as I understand it, this new pay per mile scheme will replace fuel tax, therefore given that our cars a relatively inefficient we should get a better cost per mile...in theory anyway.
