Am going to look at a year 2000 UK Turbo 2000 today (50k miles), with a view to buying. I Have done some looking into insurance (ouch!) and general owenership things.

I understand that these cars need servicing every 6 months, or 7500 miles. Looking at some of the posts on here, some people do oil / filter changes every 3000 miles - is this really needed on top of the service schedule?

I live in Epsom, Surrey, but spend lots of work time at Park Royal NW London, where there is supposed to be quite a good Subura service shop, anyone used them/reccommend them?

No, it's not, unless you're really driving the car hard on the track or something. Just put a decent quality oil in it.

If you're planning to keep the car for a long long time or seriously modify it would probably be worthwhile. Personally I just stick to the Subaru schedule. My MY00 is up to 62k and is running sweet as a nut, I've got a mate with a MY99 with 90k up and that feels just as good(smells of dog, mind).

Bear in mind that at 50K, either the cam belt (C&D) service will have just been done, or if it hasn't will need doing soon. FOr that you are looking at around £530 with an independant specialist, or somewhat more with a main dealer. Might be a bargaining tool if you decide to buy.

I service mine every 6 months. Next one is the big 90K service (another C&D)

The cam belt was changed at 36,000 miles at the end of 2004 - current owner says it wont need doing again until end of 2008?

i get my98 serviced every 7500 miles as stated by subaru with good quality oil and filter with 138,000 on the clock (with quite a lot of mods to the engine) runs sweet as a nut. i would say stick to with what subaru say.service it more regular if you are hard on the engine or do track work

For MY00's their 1st cambelt change is not due until 60k, had mine done at this mileage a couple of months ago. If it had it done at 36k it suggests a careful owner.

Cambelt is replaced every 45k or 3 years whichever is sooner. So it will need doing sometime this year in your case by the looks of things.

As above, put a decent quality synthetic in it (Silkolene Pro S) is what I use and 6 months or 7500 miles is fine.

Its only worth changing more frequently if you've modified the car quite heavily or do a lot of track work.

I've owned my MY00 from new and I do very low mileage (still only at 25K !) I took a pragmatic approach of annual servicing and I have not had any problems at all. I can recommend Privilege for insurance (with mods) and Subaru4u for servicing: Subaru4you - servicing your Subaru

Thanks for the responses. I am having lots of problems with insurance, only because I have zero years no claims bonus. I gave up 5 years + ncb when I started to ride bike. Graham Molton gave me a good quote though.

Yep, they also wont touch you with 0 NCB, minimum is 3 years - I already tried it, with 3 years NCB, £415, with 0 NCB - Error - Please call us!!!!

Don't forget that servicing goes on time aswell as mileage. The cambelt on a MY99/00 needs replacing every 4 years or 60,000miles. So if the owner can prove it was changed into 2004, then he is correct in saying that it won't need changing until 2008.
As regards to oil, again, it goes on time and mileage, which ever comes first.
If like me, you only do 6000 miles a year, then the oil will indeed be changed every 3000miles (every 6months).

i too only do 6k miles a year so change oil and filter every 3k or 6months then get it serviced every 12months just had 77k service £320

Wrong, MY99 is 3 years (45000miles), MY00 is 4 years (60000miles). The engine/belt/pulley etc are the same on both models and even my dealer said it isn't worth doing the MY99 every 3 years! Although, go ahead if you have lots of £££ to waste.

An oil and filter change is pretty simple to do.
I change mine every 3000 because.
a/ The car is a bit of hobby.
b/I can afford to go a bit extra on the servicing.

I do think its prob. a bit of a waste of money, the "old" oil still feeels pretty good.
I do not track car either!!
Some people spend a fortune on in car hi fi etc. that is "their" hobby.
Other tune the car more and more.

Regular oil changes are important esp on a tracked car, but the correct and good quality oil just as important.
