Default Handcuffed to my scooby.......

Last night I was on my way to fill up with V-power at the local shell garage, Well I say local its in the middle of noware.

As I turned off the roundabout just before the petrol station a local police 4x4 came off one of the other exits on the roundabout and was now behind me.
I never gave it another thought and turned into the petrol station, Stoped at the pump and opened the door but as I did a hand appeared over my shoulder and removed the keys from the ignition, I looked around and there was a police officer with my keys.

I politely asked if I could have my keys back and he told me to stay in my seat and proceded to handcuff me to the stearing wheel.
When I asked what I had done wrong he said "This isnt your car is it".

Now the car is registered in my wifes name and this is what had shown up when he had checked it and the stupid copper had seen a male wearing a hoody in on his own and assumed that id nicked it.

So after showing him some id and him making several checks over his radio I was released from the handcuffs,
He then asks why Id tryed to avoid him??
I was a bit confussed and asked what he ment, He then asked why I had turned in to the petrol station to avoid him??

I pointed to the petrol needle which was on empty and told him that the only thing I was trying to avoid was running out of petrol.......

I took his badge number and am thinking about making a complaint.

What a tosser.

He had no right to hand cuff you at all!
Report him, immediately!

Oh my god!!!
The police actually being on the ball and doing their job!!
If this kind of behaviour meant more car thieves got caught then I would be happy to be hancuffed to my steering wheel whilst they checked I was the owner every week!

People on here moan when cars get stolen and then we here people whinging about things like this.

Get over it

Don't waste your time. They'll only cover it all up, and from then on, you're a marked man!
Hint: (trust any copper as far as you can throw a carload, you won't go far wrong!)

Far from being a "tosser" maybe, just maybe, he was doing his job? Were you wearing a baseball cap as well?
I know it must have been a bit frightening but comes the day (hopefully not!) when your wifes car actually does get nicked, you'll hope there's a copper out there who's got his wits about him?

There might be cctv footage of the forecourt though... they'd struggle to 'hide' that......

Had the car been reported stolen? No. Was the driver driving dangerously? No.
How the hell was that copper doing his job?

By the fact his suspicions were aroused by the difference in sex of the registered keeper and driver. Coupled with the fact that Subarus are highly desirable vehicles to thieves.
He was doing his job by detaining the driver until he could ascertain if it was stolen.

If a car is stolen whilst someone is holiday or at work and isn't reported does that mean that it isn't stolen until the owner returns from work / holiday and reports it?

That means that pretty much every driver needs pulling over!

you did well getting his collar number, now you need to ring up and ask for the duty inspector. What he did was absolutely outrageous and using cuffs without first warning you or charging you is wrong. I would definitely be complaining that's why you need to insist on speaking to or getting the name of the duty inspector, don't let them fob you off. Also approach the garage owners and request a copy of the cctv footage.

i wouldn't mind being pulled over and a few details checked out, the copper has done what he thought was right, immobilising the car and driver while the checks are carried out. how many times on programmes like police stop do you see the officer approach car only for it to speed off?
bit heavy handed maybe, but sometimes its the only way!

And this is my point. Cars do need pulling over a lot more for any slight suspicion of being stolen.

As I said if this meant less car theft then I would have no complaints.

Would I be correct in assuming you have never been a victim of car theft?

I thought the phrase is 'Presumed innocent until proven guilty.', not 'Presumed guilty until proven innocent.' .
Details check, yes, but being hand-cuffed to the steering wheel before you've said a word is way over the top!

Since when does a routine stop involve being cuffed to the steering wheel.
Innocent until proven guilty isn't it

Funnily enough, no.
But I always fit a fuel cut off swtich to whatever car I own, plus I always use a high visability steering lock. I also never leave anything of any value on display.
If more people did things such as these, it would stop a lot more car theft than moody policeman pulling random people over, where the theft may have already taken place!

Are you not arrested once you have handcufffs on?

And i thought police officers did not have the authority do un-arrest someone.

Red face

I thought this thread was going to be about a stag-do from the title

I think the officer was a bit keen too! , just a pity this happened to a genuine owner/driver, maybe hand cuffing someone if they couldnt provide information about the registered keeper or verify who they are and why they are in it in the first place would be acceptable
