Default MOT Question

My partner recently bought a new car and we need to sell her old one.

The car isn't worth a lot (<£1000) and currently the MOT runs out in April.

12 Months MOT would help sell the car more easily.

My question is - If I take the car for an MOT and it fails, can we still sell the car as having an MOT till April?

The answer is yes. You still have a valid MOT at the time of sale.
Abit crafty but you are under no obligation to disclose that it has just failed an MOT. If it fails on a potentially dangerous defect you could be liable if this were to come to light after an accident.
Hope this helps.

What will the computerised MOT database say if the car is checked?

It doesn't void it. If the car passes it will get a new 12 month MoT. If it fails, the old one is still valid, although details of the failed test will be on the computerised database, therefore any potential buyer will be able to see detail of the failure on line.

No, you can MoT a car anytime you like, but, if you get it done more than one month before it is due, it will only run for 12 months. If you get it done with one month to go, then you can include that month in the new MoT - Effectively you get a 13 month MoT.

MOT tester says “Your MOT is valid until its expiry date even if in the meantime your car fails the MOT - the original pass is still valid. In fact you can have the Test done up to a calendar month before the expiry date and have the new MOT forward-dated to the expiry date of the existing certificate. So if you have your car Tested during that month and it fails, this gives you time to have the repairs carried out and the car re-tested before the expiry of the original certificate and you are not disadvantaged as a result. - MOTT."
