Default Do I need the bonnet lining?

Do I need that black bonnet lining stuff on MY03 JDM Sti? Because its rather annoying, and if you dont know what I mean I dont know how else to describe it, the stuff underneath ur bonnet when you open it.

Whats its job, and does it even benefit me?

Won't the heat from the engine make your paint peel?

I think this could be there as a heat shield to protect the precious paintwork on your bonnet

what i was thinking... sounds silly but dunno if its worth taking it off to keep the engine a little cooler in the summer, and risk a bonnet respray...

pros and cons either end of the scale on this one...

whell m8... as far as the scoob getting into trouble due to a bit of heat in the summer, I dont think this is known...the paintwork on the other hand....its your call, but I dont think taking the linning off is going to help all that much with the heat situation

Get a microphone stick it on your engine bay and wire it in to your stereo

The liner is the thing that makes the 110-120mph buzzing noise, when the top layer frays at the edges. So there is that benefit to be had by removing it, if it's old and knackered. Otherwise it's just sound deadening and a bit of heat insulation to stop the bonnet getting too hot.

TBH I could do with a replacement for mine if you don't want yours...don't know if a new one would fit my old classic though.

im sure its just to cut down on engine noise,if it was to protect the paint from heat damage it would be all over the inner wings.

Had mine off for months, no damage.

With the bonnet vents, it's hardly deadening any engine noise.
It's certainly not there to hold the heat.

I wouldn't take out the liner, after suffering crows-foot (very fine paint crazing caused by excess heat) on cars WITH the lining, and knowing that underbonnet temps on the Impreza can get quite toasty when sat in slow traffic or when parked, I wouldn't do it (especially with unwrapped aftermarket downpipe and headers). The paint won't craze straight away, it could happen after as much as three to five years of heat exposure.

Also don't complain about noisy tappets/injectors afterwards

iv been in the motor trade for over 20 years (own my own bodyshop now) and its just sound deadening nothing else when a car is baked in an oven or got an infra red lamp pointed at a panel the suface temp gets a lot hotter than it will off your engine and that "crows foot" thing your on about is because a panel has been painted incorectly or badly preped

Highly doubtful about being incorrectly prepared, it was definetly heat on this particular car.

Its quite a common occurance for the marque in question to suffer heat damage on the bonnet areas.

Sierra cossies used to suffer from crazing of the paint from very hot turbos but I can only remember this being a problem when there was no heat shield fitted. The turbo on subarus are further from the bonnet as well as having a decent heat shield anyway.

The carpet stuff is just sound deadening and will make absolutely no difference to your paintwork. If it were meant as a heat barrier it would be made of a different material don't you think?

Your engine bay will never get hot enough to do paint damage

I work in a body shop and the only way u will damage your paint is by setting light to the soundedener and havin a fire under the bonnet (All the more reason to take it out! )

Its there as a NVH aide and it may keep a little noise in for the drive-by noise tests too... If you can live with the slight increase in NVH then remove it.
