I was in merseyspeed yesterday and the guy said something along the lines that subaru have bought Morette, or the rights for the subaru Morette lights and so you can now only buy the lights from subaru dealers.
Is this bollocks or true?!?

It certainly sounds like bollocks doesnt it? Perhaps theyre referring (in a mistaken/confused way) to the EU-granted manufacturers protection against 'pattern' parts?

It is True that you can only buy the Headlights from Subaru themselves.
Morette UK have only licensed subaru to sell them in the UK. Any Morrette Dealer will advise you to go direct to Subaru.
If there is some third party scooby specialist selling them then they would have purchased from subaru dealers at trade price.
This also happened with the Peugeot 206 and 306 models aswell, where only Peugeot were the licensee to buy from.

The way I understand it is this.
Subaru saw how relatively common (at that time, anyway) the Morette twin headlamp conversion was becoming on the classic Scoobs.
They knew they had dropped a bo##ock with the styling on the bugeye so developed in conjunction with Morette the conversion for the bugeye, unfortunately this collaboration/partnership has stayed, but you can still buy the classic conversion because Subaru had no hand in it's design or manufacture.
This is what I was told by Morette for who I am a dealer.
