Default info - my00 vs my06

Hi - i was just wondering if anyone could explain the difference in the 4wd system from the above 2 vehicles.

My previous car was a 2005 STI TYPE UK (standard), and the thing that i loved about it was the over steer - around roundabouts and the like i could easily get the rear end out and drive sideways and really control it (i left the adjustable torque **** alone)

Now my current 1999 TURBO 2000 AWD ESTATE - ECUTEK'd and modified to 316 bhp is different. I booted it round a roundabout and instead of the controllable oversteer i just rapidly drifted to the left and had to do a manouvre to avoid mounting the kerb.

** I was in the middle of a trading estate late at night with no one around incidentally **

So could anyone explain the difference in traction of the 2 vehicles please?

I can't explain the difference as I've never driven a new age with manual diff control but I have a 2000 classic and the symptoms you describe are well known.

The car will understeer with power through the corner, the secret is to learn the ballence of the car by using the throttle in corners,if your a bit fast and start to feel understeer lifting off slightly through a corner will make the nose tuck in and the Subaru's particularly good in that doing this rarely produces lift off oversteer.

With practice I've found my Impreza the most satisfying car that I've ever driven, in the right circumstances on a quiet twisty road .................

Your newage car would've had a better chassis for a start, plus better diffs and DCCD will also have been actively biasing power front or rear (whichever needed it most) in order to help maintain control of the car.

I really can't understand why you went and got rid of the MY05 car for a much older model.

Agreed.

Naturally an Impreza is set up from Subaru to understeer, the difference on the MY05+ STi models is that the DCCD-A has the ability to quickly switch this back into a more balanced situation.. thus creating 'drift'/oversteer in certain situations.

A couple of choice mods can sort this one out for you..

Prodrive geo settings, anti-lift kit, stiffer rear arb and solid arb drop links. will address the balance.

P1/RB5 prodrive suspension, or STi5/6 will also eliminate a lot of that wallowyness on the edge.

Though it will still tend to understeer under power, that just takes a bit of a different driving style to cure.
