It sounds a bit suspicious like, If he was an admirer surely he'd just knock on the door and ask? I know I've taken plenty of pictures before at meets but taking pictures in the street is a bit dodgy Didn't you try to approach the guy or was he too quick?

If the car wasnt parked where it would be seen regularly then the chances are that he was just a fan of the car and took a chance shot of it. If you are there on a regular basis i would change your routine a little or use another car, if you have one, to visit your mother. Most scum that would try to nick your car have no patience so if it isnt around for a while they will probably look for another.

Probably had to take a picture as evidence, to explain to his friends just how ugly-a-car he had seen.

Yep, I've had kids taking photos of my car outside supermarkets etc, they even asked on the one time I was sitting in it..
First time you think the worst, but in reality, would they seriously be nicking a Subaru to order and if so why the need for a photo..?..

could be stolen to order.
They now have your registration. They could write to DVLA, pay £5 and get ownership details ie your address or registered address where the car is kept.
Worth keeping an eye out.
