I will take a wild guess and suggest it was stolen.

Unless it was that horrible tarted-up 1800GL from New Mills; its likely to have been an STI V6 if it was yellow...

I'd like to throw my hat in the ring, and suggest that while the car may not have been stolen, I reckon the chap driving it had done something wrong, and the police cars were chasing him to get him to stop. For example, he may have beaten someone up, and been driving in his own car when spotted by the police who gave chase.

Then again, I could be wrong. The car may have been stolen...

More likely still, that their chinese was ready and they were trying to overtake the Impreza driver who was holding them up !
