Whats the best i can get for £11k?
#1
Right guys my old man is buying a new car to replace the 406.
He's now single and wants something sporty.
He's pretty much leaving the decision to me.
So of course its gotta be a Impreza Turbo.
He's got £11,000 to spend though i could possibly stretch him to a little more.
It can be UK or import (Jap) as insurance is negligable (due to him being an old duffer )
Preferably the car would be post face-lift.
My ideal for him would be a Type R but i doubt any would fall into his price range.
So basically what do you think we could get, model, age, mileage etc.
Thanks very much for the help.

£11k? You looked in auto trader for some prices?
MY97/MY98 would be feasible at that price.....I think you will find it hard to find a mint STI for that price range but then again I could be wrong.......

As an owner of a 406 and a MY00 UK I think he will be quite shocked by (in comparison) the rock hard ride and high noise levels even of a car with UK spec suspension. A Type R would be even more interesting with short gearing, compulsory appetite for SUL and a ride from hell. And the interior build quality, paint quality and economy could be quite a let down.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore my Scooby, but if he has to live with it daily then he has to be able to put up with a lot of compromises and hassle factor for (vastly) increased gripping, stopping, going and feedback.

I'd stick with a UK car for a start - if he wants the hard stuff, then go for an import. UK cars are almost as fast without as much hassle as an import. A 98MY would be within reach - make sure it's had the block/piston replacement though. Or a mint 97MY, a mate of mine is looking at a Cat for his first scoob on your old man's budget.
Incidentally, are you now motoring after that dozy git crashed into you?

Cheers for the replies.
Miles, i've not got the insurance settled yet, although i think its getting there. They have recieved 3 very favourable eye-witness statements so hopefully it will work out ok. Im probably not gonna bother getting a new car for at least a couple of months, as i don't really need one in St Andrews.
Hope your car's keeping in shape, might see you at a meet
See ya,
Kos
Edited to say sorry to hear that your car got vandalised I hope u can get it fixed like new.

I think Fast bloke is refering to my good self. It's true I got a very good price. I was looking for a while but I saw a few MY99's with circa 30000 miles for £11K. Just keep checking the autotrader.

Kosy, has he ever driven one?
Trying to think long term here, he will indeed be pretty shocked by the change from a 406.
My dad (who ain't your dad, unless something went wrong earlier!), would be stunned by the power, depressed by the fuel consumption, and p'd off by the fact that he couldn't put the back seat down. In short, if I convinced him to buy an STI (in my dreams), he'd probably sell it in a couple of months. Whereas if I convinced him of a UK wagon, and told him to back off the right foot, he could well keep it for a few years.
So you should act in his best interests, of course
Good luck

I bought a MY99 WRX import 18 months ago privately for £12,500 with 29k. so you should be able to get an equivalent deal. The WRX is a lot quicker. I had a straight line race with a friend with a MY99 UK spec, overtook him and pulled away at quite some pace.

Kosy,
I had £11.5ish to spend back in August I looked at loads of scoobys, I was find at this price the MY99's where very tatty (you get what you pay for). I decided I would rather get a mint car thats slightly older, than a few letters new on the plate and dodgy engine.
Anyway after a couple of months looking I got my MY97 (reddish blue) from a Subaru main dealer, 1 Dr owner, Full Subaru History, and just under 30K on the clock. 1 years Subaru warranty. It is like new not a mark on it.
It was priced at £12,700 I paid £11,300.
Very pleased it was worth looking for the right car.

Good point Martyn.
I think we may have to do that. MY99 for £11k might be a bit ambitious. Im worried about the piston-slap problems with the MY98. So if we get a UK it will probably be a MY97.
Cheers for the advice
Kos.

Markus, dogs have far better hearing than humans, so hers is probably a bit sensitive, and I suspect she takes offence to the effects of that section of the Channel Tunnel that you have hanging off the back of your car

I'm just thinking about running costs of an £11k scooby. You could get a fine one, but your probably getting into higher milages and so bigger service bills etc. Also I think an £11k ITR is probably going to be a little tidier(?tidy-er! LOL) than a similar priced scooby, I don't think scoobs age so well, rattles and parking dings appear daily .
Saying that I am on my 4th scoob, luv em, but 'regular' people may not care to deal with the niggling little problems we happily ignore.
Plus it means you get to drive a completely differnt car if your nice to him

A '98 with the piston kit or, even better, with the replacement block shouldn't be a problem. However I would be nervous buying a '98 without either of those mods.
Kosy, Got a new, well 2nd, wing mirror for the car. Still got a green scoop - it's growing on me, as it should after 14 months

I paid £11,500 for my brand 'spank me' new Clio 172 in September. It was imported from Belgium through Northern Car Imports in Leeds.
If your old man wants a sporty NEW car, I can't think of anything better for the money (but then I would say that!)
Cheers,
Jon

LOL Chuck, yeah he will let me drive it, so im on my best behaviour from now on.
He likes the looks of a FTO, but a ITR would be far better. We're going to a import dealer tommorrow hopefully they will have one to have a close look at. I have a feeling that the ITR will be even harder to live with than a Scoob (harshness, lack of sound proofing) though. Hopefully he'll plump for the Subaru.
