Default Turbo going off-boost at 5500rpm

Hi Guys

Just test driven an '04 PPP WRX - everything was lovely except...

The turbo was going off-boost at about 5000rpm (as tested in second gear, engine warm).

Any suggestions what this might be, it it a common thing? Thought something like temperature sensor, but for example it also had bugger all fuel so is there some form of fuel sensor to prevent knock if non 97ron fuel is used or something?

Didn't commit to buy until I've done some reserach - it's still under warranty so if it's something minor then I'm happy for them to sort it, but don't want to buy it if it's the sign of something potentially more sinister.

Sorry, forgot to look at any dashboard lights so don't know if there was a warning light - was too busy "feeling" the car.

Ta,

Sy

The Wrx is equipped with a small turbo mate (a TD04) this will have given its best at about 5.5k rpm (I think that's the peak point in the rev range for bhp for a WRX). It's the price you pay from having the early and fast spool.

Yes, scoobies have an active knock sensor and will retard ignition and, consequently, performance if lower octane petrol is used. PPP eqipped cars won't run nearly as well on 95ron The dealer should not be using it.

Ns04

It's definately "turning off" rather than "easing off" as I would expect with a turbo having given its best. It feels like the brakes have been stamped on.

sounds like overboost, fuel cutting owing to high boost pressure

Ah OK, is this likely to be something that is probably a reletavely straightforward fix then, e.g. replacement blow-off valve or something? Clearly if it's overboosting then the turbo itself is fine I would presume?

Hee hee, after all this it was just the fact it had bugger all fuel! Must have been starving the feed from the tank under hard acceleration! Few litres of Shell's finest and it was running great
