Default Looking for my first scooby - what to look for?

Hi there,
I'm looking to buy a 2.0 turbo sportswagon somewhere around '99/00 maybe 01 at a push.

Never had one before and only been out in 2. One had a turbo pressure boost adjuster computer thingy (?!) on the dash but the g/box felt a bit loose under power so I walked away.

Really looking for a nice one with good mileage (maybe up to 60K). What sort of price can I expect and what in particular should I be looking out for?

Cheers!
Paul

Mods aren´t necessarily bad. Depends on the aproach. I would go for a ´lightly moded version´ exhaust etc where someone has taken a sensible approach. Anything around 300bhp ish sould be OK on standard gearbox and clutch. These are the things that can let go - if the car is not moded properly. 60K is a big expensive service - so look for one just over that has had the service. Scoobs go through tyres fairly quick if driven hard. Especialy check inside edges. The four pots are fine but if you can find one with a brake upgrade and quickshift then it really does make for a better car. I think My99 had issues with piston slap - can anyone confirm or deny this. Im sue there is more but I expect other people willpost.
Steve.

I think he meant look in evo - for a better car!
You could also try auto-trader for decent ones.

Try to avoid pre 97MY's if you're looking to mod, best to go for 98MY+ since you get a more efficient engine and can re-map easier/cheaper.

clutch, gearbox, and brakes take a battering, especially when the car is not treated with some degree of mechanical-sympathy so walking away from a sloppy shifter probably saved you a whole load of cash.

Hope you find a nice one!

Look for one that has full service history & has not been modded to hell.

What about buying an old impreza say 95 reg.
Get a jap import which has not been in the uk for too long so its less likely to have rust probs.
Strip it down - remove engine, gearbox and all ancillaries.
Replace with 2.3 litre closed deck engine and new sti gearbox. A "phat" turbo and front mount intercooler, apexi fc controller. Get it mapped by Andy F and then hold onto your hat.
Actually not too sure what all that would cost 15K?? who knows but what a great project if you had the patience
