Default Advice please for a newbie

Bought my first impreza turbo 2 weeks ago it is a 98 S UK car with 39k on the clock. Did an oil and filter change and everyone talked about millers oil so i bought some. The bloke in the shop when i told him the mileage recommended Millers 5-50 viscosity full synthetic. I with no mechanical knowle dge at all took his advice and put it in my motor. After around 4 day - 80 miles i noticed that the engine was not as sweet as it was when i bought it. It was like a louder than normal tappety type noise in when both with the bonnet up and sat in the car. I took it to my local independant impreza speacialist who took it out immediately and replaced it with Millers 10-40. He stated that there may before he put the new oil in be a possiblility of engine damage but i was lucky that i had done so few miles. The new oil went in and touch wood it seems back to normal. Is and was this possible my mates say no chance but i am worried. Honest responses please.

No dude, you'l be ok, just tappety because the "5"-50 is too thin, every scooby iv'e had has always used either 10-40 or 10-50 and never had any trouble. So stick too that and buy the best quality you can afford, remember quality oil may cost more to start with but it will need to be changed less often than cheap oil. Also what oil was used previous to when you bought it? Anyway don't worry imprezas are really strong cars and unless they have been used by an uncaring idiot should give you very little trouble .ENJOY

I think a 5w?? grade is considered to be too thin on a classic shape impreza. Therefore, you would have got more engine noise. As the specialist said, stick with atleast a 10w?? grade oil. Try searching this site for 'engine oil'. So many threads have covered this topic. Personally, I use Mobil 1 15w50, as I have used it for over 30,000miles (10 changes) without a problem. What you are using, should also be fine.
