From today’s Irish Independent:

A SPATE of road deaths over the last 48 hours including the deaths of three friends has brought the number of traffic fatalities this year to 350.

Friends Paul O'Riordan, who had been celebrating his 35th birthday, Declan Hewitt (25) and Jonathan Maher (21), all from Stradbally, were killed at around 1am yesterday morning in Co Laois.

Another friend, Niall Sheehy (37), who lives about three miles from Stradbally, received head injuries and remains in a critical condition in Beaumount hospital.

It is believed the men who all lived within a couple of hundred yards of each other were within minutes of their homes when the tragedy occurred.

The accident happened at Oakvale on the Carlow-Stradbally road when their blue 1998 Subaru Impreza crashed through a wall, mounted a ditch and careered for over 200 feet before somersaulting and landing on its roof.

Three of the men were thrown from the car as it tumbled through the air; the fourth had to be cut from the wreckage.

It is believed the four men had attended a funeral earlier yesterday in the village of Ballylinan, and later watched the Ireland-Iran football match while celebrating Mr O'Riordan's birthday.

"It's a terrible tragedy to hit such a small village. We're such a close-knit community here that everybody is stunned they were solid young lads," said local parish priest Fr Sean Kelly.

Sad news
Deep feelings for the families at this time
But it also shows you that subaru's do crash and the outcome is normally severe

I'm totally lost as to why this has been posted. Many people lose their lives daily in accidents, is the Subaru somehow significant. I read the same story this morning in a different paper which didn't mention the type of vehicle involved. Traffic acccidents are a sad fact of life but publishing pics of the aftermath is hardly showing respect to those who died. Perhaps a few pics of shooting/bombing victims would be a good idea too.

I think apart of it Bug is that alot of newer drivers and even some of the older drivers of subaru's think that this doesnt happen
I know what you mean by seeing posts like this but you should still have regard for the families, this tragedy could have been caused by a number of things, one being speed and bad driving, another could have been a blow out, you dont know but what it does bring home is that this could happen to anyone of us on this board when the red mist takes over....

We have many times in the past paid respect to car crash victims.

The reason I felt this needed posting was the fact that that Subaru enthusiasts had died.

And the fact that it’s in Ireland’s biggest selling daily newspaper and on prime time TV means that it’s news.

Bug eyed wonder
Nowhere in the pic do I see any "victims" of the accident, just the car that was being driven at the time of the accident.
After the events of Sep 11th did the newspapers stop showing pictures of the aftermath of what happened to the twin towers?!? No
Was this a sign of disrespect for the victims of that dreadful act? No
I fail to see how this is lack of respect at all?!?

Where does it say this in the report?
You're making assumptions about the driver who is sadly unable to defend himself.

The relevance is that it is such a good car, that it makes those of use who like to _think_ we are good drivers, actually believe it.

Never hurts to remind all of us of the possible consequences, whatever the cause.

Again my deepest sympathies.

Unfortunately I know the families of these poor guys. As someone mentioned earlier there was drink involved and very high speed but this doesn't take from the tragedy any.

What really annoyed me too was hte reporting of the incident. one of the papers had the headline. "Supercar Subaru takes 3 lives".
At the weekend the ISDC were attending the Motorsport international show at the RDS in Dublin and I was on the stand for 2 of the days. The comments about the accident were passed to me numerous times in different ways. Some people even said that we shouldn't be showing off these killer cars!

Not the kind of press that we need.

Once again my deepest sympathies to all concerned
