It is the pipe that links the manifolds to the turbo,
A GOOD QUALITY aftermarket one will free up the gas flow and make a little more power.

dont think you need to change the up-pipe mate, as on early wrx's, if swapping for a full decat such as i did, you just swap the old cat downpipe/up-pipe for a decat downpipe. i think i got that right. 3 piece exhaust system then.

I beg to differ,
The oem up pipe is a small diameter and if they have not started to rattle already the heat shield will be rattling very soon.
Change it for a GOOD larger bore pipe and you will not regret it, after all whats another £100 odd???
This pipe has nothing to do with after turbo 3 piece systems, it comes before the turbo.

Thats the down pipe,
You can only see the up-pipe from under the engine, hence all the skinned knuckles when changing it.

See that nut, almost dead centre of your picture but very near the bottom of the image.
That is one of the up-pipe studs.
Now do you see why I say..............Skinned knuckles

For the amount of trouble that changing the up pipe will cause; it really isnt worth the bother. When you have fettled manifolds or decent matched equal or semi-equal (whats the point in that?) manifolds then there may be something to gain from fitting a matched replacement up pipe. Until then Id suggest spending your time and money elsewhere.
