Observations on Italian driving
Even the Carabinieri drive their Alfas with the fog lights on;
The most you can get on a small scooter is four - three is not unusual tho;
Road rage simply does not exist - everyone pulls out in front of everyone else so its kind of expected;
The horn is used to great affect - plus it annoyed me intensely;
The longer or more often you use the horn, the more priority you get on the road;
Piaggio three-wheeler pick-ups must be overloaded before they can be driven on the highway;
Pedestrian crossings are purely for decoration;
The smallest roads must be used by the largest hgv's, and meeting one head-on is a bonus (ideal for much arm-waving activity);
The use of a mobile-phone while driving is compulsory;
Only the most accomplished can ride a scooter and send a text message while negotiating a busy crossroads;
Most Italians are skilled at multi-tasking, especially while driving.
I am now absolutely convinced we live in a cotton wool padded environment here in the UK. We no longer face risk and danger.
In the short space of a week in Naples and Sorrento, I must have witnessed hundreds of near-misses (by UK standards) but never an accident. They must happen tho, as the number of cars without body damage is astonishingly small.
On the good side, the pasta is great and the weather was too.
