subaru taken from outside my house
i bought a subaru last night and had no road-tax and was going to get the road tax today but council guys came and took the car from outside and are demanding £200. What can be done

Sounds a bit dodgy to me. IYour saying it was there for one night with no tax and that just happened to be the Thursday night that they were out???
If it is legit then why didn't you just explain it to them, i'm sure they would have taken your comments on board.

I think you are stuffed on it to be honest, certainly in the short term payup or they will start levying storage charges, but its strange as my local council always put a note on for 48hours prior to removal.

I'm guessing that it was'nt delivered on a trailer, Hence it was driven with no tax and that would invalidate your insurance if you have some, £200 is a small price to pay to what could have happened if you had crashed it!

Same here my council (Poole in dorset)gives 48hrs warning, but have to agree with the rookie best pay up and get before they screw you for more money.
Afterwards speak to the council about their rules as if 2 councils form either end of the country have the same rules its surprising that yours doesn't.
Plus I bet someone reported you as well.

just spoke to them, going to pick up the car and they will refund £120 when i get road tax. also how is it possible to get road tax with about the log book becuase i have just bought the car

Remember they are allowed to crush cars that have been on the road with no tax, so take it on the chin and pay up.
Its a bugger when you had no intention to defraud but they have become very heavy handed because of the hundreds of thousands of people driving without tax and insurance (remember, by enforcing car tax, you enforce insurance as well, which is a good thing really)

Was it taxed when you bought it and the precious owner kept the disk?
Or was it registered as SORN, if registered as SORN I don't think you will have a leg to stand on.
Have a look on the DVLA site and see if it's showing as taxed or you could call them, If it is showing the vehicle is taxed they should not have taken it the worst they should have done it reported you for not displaying it and you receive a notice.
Best pay and get it out ASAP and argue with them later before the charges build up.

Driving without tax is NOT against the law,nor have any insurance consecquences, driving without mot IS and will invalidate your insurance, unless you have booked your car in to a MOT station and you are on the way there.

'The Council' may not take a car and 'impound' it. The DVLAs agents on the other hand, can and will clamp and then remove untaxed cars.

I don't quite know the council's "abilities" in these cases... I'd have to do some research. I do know that councils frown on untaxed vehicles and generally make as big a fuss as they can.
It strikes me as very odd that they can pick up the car all-in-one-go, having seen it once, without giving any notice etc.

although £260 to insure my scooby for 28 days is a bit steep PMSL
but
IMPORTANT - ROAD LICENSING (TAXATION) : dayinsure.com motor insurance certificates provide evidence of insurance in the format prescribed by Road Traffic Act legislation. However, the DVLA and UK Post Offices will not accept electronically downloaded documents for road fund licence purposes.
Therefore, you cannot purchase temporary insurance under this arrangement for the purposes of obtaining a road fund licence (taxing a vehicle).
Road fund licences should be obtained using documentation supplied by the provider of appropriate annual insurance cover on the relevant vehicle.

micky, i agree with that mate, but the Shotley brigde post office have taken it quite a few times now,
you only have to satisfy the actual post office staff, they only do a visual check on it,
