Default wierd howling noise...

Hi chaps,
Has anyone come across a wierd howling noise thats intermittent, not on an Impreza but on a fiat punto! It's my sons car and the noise only happens when the car is moving...but it isnt engine speed related (if you coast when noise appears it makes no difference, and reving engine has no effect)It does disappear when you come to a halt..sort of fades away as opposed to cutting out suddenly...
Anyone any ideas?...

don't think it's a wheel bearing as it seems too intermittent...goes away completly for quite a time then reappears...

I don't think it's bearings, and it's definately from the front of the car...and intermittent as I've said. It sounds like it's in the engine bay, but as it only happens when the car is on the move and "fades away to nothing" as you come to a stop it's hard to trace.
Car drives fine, noise doesn't react directly to braking but to slowing...to my ears almost as if it's air speed related...It's very wierd...
Steve, what were you going to say about the sporting?...

Crusher,

So sorry for such a late reply.

I had a Sporting 1.2 16v and the 1.4 GT (not long at all though). The Sporting I had a similar noise and then the box went. Lost 1 & 3 with no pre-warning.

Other options could be the housing of the air box as the clips tend to rust up and it could be sucking in too much air etc?

Hope this helps if it hasn't been sorted yet.

Steve
