Help - Hydraulic tappet noise?
Has anybody had a faulty hydraulic tappet? My Scoob is a MY03 wagon with 58k miles and a full service history. Oil level is OK but sometimes from cold the engine sounds like a sewing machine which eventually goes off. When I drive into the station car park in the morning (approx 2 miles from cold) and am a bit late I pull it round the right-angle bends a bit sharpish and the tappy sound comes back. It is sometimes still there when I drive away in the evening but it normally goes by the time I am home. It's alright the rest of the time - 450 mile round trip a couple of weeks ago and no problems.
The only explanation I can think of is a dodgy tappet although coming on after a sharp turn would suggest something to do with oil surge. Anybody got any ideas?

Could be piston slap, more common in the MY98 cars.
It sounds a bit clattery when cold then goes away when warm.
Also if the water pump bearing is on the way out it can 'tick' when cold and on mine it went away when warm. Good job my mechanic caught it early as it can throw the cambelt Best get it checked out ASAP
