Quote: "This apparent gain in power is due to the ECU of the car’s ability to advance the ignition timing to take advantage of the extra power the higher octane offers."
Is this the case once you've had you car chipped for example and EcuTek remap, will that advance the ignition if I put 99 ron fuel rather than 97 or even 95 ron fuels?
(I always have used Optimax so don't know)

But I am well happy with Tesco super, coming from optimax it seems to do the trick just as well if not a little better, although I am yet to see what I get to this tank and I normally get 250 miles with Shell

With my small turbo and low boost Im thinking about using Sainsbury's (BP sourced) SUL because its much cheaper. Our local Sainsbury doesnt stock SUL though, the closest outlet is Meadowhall.

For some reason,as i have said before, i get better mpg with optimax/v power than tesco 99 ron, even when tescos was a few pence cheaper,go figure ?!?!
if tescos was,say 75p litre and v power was still at 99.9 then i would use tescos, but since they are pretty identical here in price, shell it is for me.

I paid 93.9p/litre in Cardiff today for Tesco99 instead of 105.9p/litre for V-Power down the road (only Shell garage in Cardiff). Saved £4.80 on 40 litres, which is worth it in my book.

Only if we find you
Personally I felt the Optimax was better than Tesco 99 and Vpower is miles better. My car feels transformed.
Strangely it seems to work better than SUL plus NF.

My understang is this :-
The calorific values [MON] is always better on the branded fuels. Shell / BP etc have higher oxygen content than supermarket fuel, hence why they actually perform better in the combustion chamber. The branded fuels burn better / cleaner and this results in better efficiency, the net effect of better efficiency is better economy as you are using smaller throttle openings for a similar BHP output when compared with a less efficient burning fuel.
I think that margins aside the supermarket fuels are blended to the minimum standards allowed to meet the RON ratings whilst the branded fuels retain their own "secret ingredients" for their own USP.
The RON rating is not nearly as important than the MON rating when looking at the quality of fuel.
I am not a fuel engineer so please avoid attacking me if you are. If you know more / better then please enlighten us all
Cheers
