Advice on Window Tinting.
Go to somewhere recommended and where you can see some of their previous jobs.
I have tinted windows myself and it ain't easy. Very hard to get rid of all the dust. However I have seen some so called professional jobs that weren't as good!
You pays ya money I guess..
Scott!

Thanks for all the help.
Think I'll use Pentagon but keep getting linked to some brothel in American when I search on it
Car mags are in the apartment so I guess I have to wait till later.
Scuffs website is impressive but unless I hear good things I'll go with the recommended boys.

In general I've found the Pentagon type tint very good, BUT, if you have a 2 door Impreza, with the rear side windows that have the black border with speckles (P1 for example), you will get problems with the tint where the black speckles are round the edge.. I've learned to put up with it as a feature, it doesnt look all that bad.
Just a warning for those that have 2 doors and what to expect...

Anyone done this?
I need to darken the rear windows and rear screen.
What sort of cost will I be looking at?
The only company I know is Paragon.
Has anyone used them.
Was it a good or bad experience?
What was the quality of the work like?

Bajie, My WRX was imported with the side and rear windows tinted already so can't comment on the company, but what can say is it looks nice on my silver 4Dr and during the day is fine BUT at night I have to wind down my front windows to see in the mirrors to reverse it. Wouldn't have it removed for the world though.

Pentagon are meant to be the leaders.
I haven't seen any tinted cars that they have done but I can definitely recommend their shatterproof treatment. Worth considering if you're getting the tinting done as they do a cut price combination I think.
Do I have to take the car and leave it at Pentagon, or do they have a mobile unit?
Where are they based and could anyone be so kind as to either put their telephone number here or send it to my email address.

You do leave the car with them as I have spoken to a chap before, but only for a few hours. I do remember that they ahve 3 bases, one in London, one in Birmingahm and one somewhere else.
cheers,
Jon

Bajie,
I've not tried these guys for anything but my Dad was doing some work for them and was impressed with their work.
They are called Scuffs (http://www.scuffs.co.uk), they do dent repairs and whilst looking at their site this morning I noticed they do tinting aswell.
A nice web site too...

I sit with my back to a wall - so no need for rear view mirrors. Boss sits a couple rows away and my monitor is directly between him and me.
BTW that seating position is not due to homophobia or anything like that.
Pentagon did a superb job on my car, probably the most professional company I have ever dealt with when it comes to car stuff. Just left it with them and did a bit of shopping. Yes it may cost a bit more but I've seen some badly fitted stuff on Novas and the like!
Armour tint (think its called that) and other derivatives are useless on any door windows on the scoob, as the windows are frame less... So dont bother putting it on...
Hope this helps, Alex

Oh, and for those near Guildford, Ian Bannings (nr Guildford railway station) have a tinting service, done by ex-pentagon staff I believe, life time guarantee and good advice.. they've done two cars for me, and a great job each time.. If you want the contact details, drop me an email... oh forgot to say, they also about £100+ cheaper than Pentagon.
Cheers, Alex
PS. they use the same product on your windows though..

I am not sure what the name of the Pentagon shatterproof treatment for glass. It works by laminating the glass, and this stops it shattering even if hit by something like a hammer (I have seen photos of the windows after hammer damage).
This works for frameless and framed windows.
AWD,
Cool, I believe the stuff Ian bannings use is said stuff, maybe not.. they actually advised against use of it on Scoobs.. Same principle as you described, the problem is that the thievies can then effectively leaver the window open as it doesnt lock inside a frame, so the only benefit is you dont get bits of glass in your car.. where as on framed doors, it will a) stop the glass from going everywhere and b) hold the window in place due to the extra support..
Does that make sense? just seems pointless to spend more if the thieves can get in anyhowz... IMHO

I think that the main reasons that Pentagon state for getting the armoured glass are:
1. Protection for you in case of an accident - no glass on people inside
2. Anti car-jacking measure - people can't just smash the glass and grab what's inside (well not very easily).
AWD,
Yeah, exactly what I was told..
From you comments above, I was told part 1, but to some degree the standard tinting achieves this... and re part 2, is less effective due to frameless windows from their previous experience (or rather customers).
Either way, dont think there is much in the price, so if someone decides to give it a go, could they post an update if they ever have the mis-fortune (god forbid) to find out if it works or not ?? ie anyone had secure tint and been broken into?
Cheers, Alex

Where's NITO when you need him
NITO's wagon has all round tint, done by pentagon, and I think he's pretty happy with it. I'll let him give the final word on it though.
Might be worth emailing him and asking him about it.
