Default Tints ?

Howdy,
I'm thinking about tinting my windows but i am a bit sceptical. I have seen some ****-poor tints in the past that look like over time the window seal has torn/worn the film. Are there any tints you can get that are more robust ?
Are all tints just sticky film ?
Although i want them done i don't want the window to look totally bollocks in 12 months time
I know doing the fronts (not windscreen) is illegal but will a company do it for "race" purposes ? Are the fuzz likely to pull me considering they haven't yet for my illegal no. plate ?
Thanks in advance.....

How do you mean for 'race' reasons ?

My tints have been on for 12 years

the place near me will tint what ever you want, but anything outside the boundaries of the law, you wont get a receipt and you never had them done there

You may well get pulled for tinting the front windows, depending on how dark you have them, and then you will probably get questioned about your illegal no plate, and they take photos now too

your choice really

As in say most aftermarket exhausts on bikes (not sure about cars) have "For race use only" but are still fitted by garages. I wouldn't have them too dark. What sort of tints do you have Sonic and after 12 years how are they looking ? Do they require any special cleaning products or normal window cleaner ?
Thanks for the help

Ahh Im with you now, dont think tints are used for racing

I only have the back window, and rear side windows tinted, they are about 5% so as dark as you can get them, after 12 years they look like they were fitted yesterday

These were fitted from the factory tho although my car is a MY00 the windows came from a 94 Jap Import

I just clean them with normal autoglym car window cleaner

As I say the place near me will do whatever you want, but outside the law you will have no guarantee or comeback with them, as they want no proof that they did the work, but they wont turn business away

Thanks, I'm not worried about come back really and i wouldn't be going for the darkest available, if i get pulled just like my no. plate i'd take full resposiblity.
Do you have any idea what i should expect to be charged for the rear window and rear sides ?

im not sure really, but I think last time I went in and got a rough quote, I was looking at between 200-250 for the rear window, and front and rear side windows

would recomend staying legal on the front side windows, had very dark tints on all round when i bought the car, great during the day, but at night, they were just pure dangerous, couldn't see properly and after 3 near miss's in two days, of me pulling out on people got rid, and now not done it since.

My car has tinted windows, which were done before I got the car. The back window and rear-side windows have the darkest tint and then the front-side windows are a bit lighter. There is also a dark strip along the top of the front wind screen.

I still have the paperwork and'll let you know who did the work as its been very professionally done. All the tinting is legal too - but I think its as dark as you can go before getting in to trouble.

I've got as near to the limit legal on the front, and limo on the back....

You'll almost always have a 5mm gap around the rim of the window as you know scoobies have rim-less doors!!

You can get places that take the glass out and tint to th edge but for the extra money, it's not really worth it......

Light Smoke:

If you want the best, try Pentagon. £300 for 4 drops and the rear, that included Supaglass film. They've never had one returned with light smoke on the fronts. You have to sign a legal disclaimer if you do the fronts, but if you're pulled, they will remove it free.

Subtle, but lOOks great. No problems after almost a year.

What would happen if you killed a motorcyclist due to not seeing them clearly enough through the tints at night?

The legislation on tints was changed for a reason.

Your insurance may also become invalid too.

But with light tints, you can see quite clearly....unless you're wearing sunglasses.....then you're a tit and look like one....

I'm biased as i'm a ex mental-rider who can't remember why I got a bike license in the first place....

Impreza front side windows usually have a slight tint anyway, and I thought that adding more tint of any shade would take it beyond the limits

I thought one of the reasons the law was changed was because some ****** killed someone and he had limo tints on his front side windows

I think he failed to tell the police and judge at the time his girlfriend was giving him a blow job at the time, hence the real reason he killed someone

Again, its been legislated for. Light tints are okay to a prescribed %. Go over that and its deemed to restrict your vision.

True....
I think legal is anything up to 30%.....

As for the 5mm gap....to get all my windows done was £150.....and you can't see the gap.....
Friend of mine got his done at Pentagon and for 3 windows was £300ish?
The exact same quality of tint-film, and no bubbling in mine?
I thank you.....

you can view my tints if you search my user name in gallery

got my rear five done at Pentagon for £200 (and its supaGlass), with the ESC discount

iirc ANY extra tint applied to the front windows\windscreen is illegal if the car has existing factory tinted glass...

not sure, not as effective as one with a frame though I'd imagine

i went for supaglass because of the way it reflects light so appears darker when looking in but doesn’t restrict your vision in the way some tints do.

Was pulled a couple of weeks ago at a VOSA check point for having the front side windows tinted , vosa checked with a meter and showed me that only 20% of light was coming thru the front windows , so the nice man ! gave me a pg9 slip and told me to drive straight home with the front windows down ( in the frigging rain !!) and i could not use the car until it was removed and inspected at a vosa main testing station .
He said 70% of light must enter thru the front screen and front side windows and that the oem tint of the glass was proberly 20% tinted anyway . So my car now looks like a van , was tinted when i got it , if it was'nt i would have gone for a lighter tint all round so keep it matched .

That's a bit worrying. I was told by the seller of my car that everything was legal and the front windows definately don't have the same degree of tint as the rears and I have no problem seeing through them so hopefully I'm OK. I wonder how to check?

you don't need to check, if any extra tint has been applied to the front three windows they will be a nick...hth

Thats not true. You can add LAF tint to Subaru front side windows and it will still pass the test.
Light tint will not though as it is too dark, however, LAF is more a solar shield and tint as you can see on my car is almost zero.

I guess the new legislation has engineered the LAF tints
