On classics i know theres issues with running them over 100mph for long periods....

how come? and can it be helped?

never ahd any with mine, MY98 UK turbo.

Ran mine on a private road of course for v long periods above 100 and never had any problems, till one day a deer ran out in front of me.

and certainly no problem with doing the same in the MY05

I ran the entire perth to aviemore with the exeption of speed cameras at 130 once, at 4am one summers morning when the road was closed specifically for me.

Never did any harm and that was about 20k miles ago or more. Did similar from hossegor to biaritz too about 4 years ago.

There are loads of threads regarding high speed runs. People have experienced engine faliures, and have put it down to high speed runs. One of the more documented issues is with the scoop not getting enough air into the intercooler. Another is with imports, they are only meant to go upto 112mph. But there are also countless people who have run their cars at high speeds for prolonged periods of time with no ill effects.

Actually wasn't it the legacy that held the record for ages for consitant high speed endurance?

I suppose that was charge cooled anyway but that can't be any good for prolonged high load either.

As said above something to do with the airflow at high speeds over the bonnet, missing the scoop.

I frequently run mine at well over a hundred for long periods of time and never had a problem.

Even when I had a standard top mount I used to run at over 100 with no probs.

heat is the problem every time, running on boost for long periods causes overheating and if you have no gaues to tell you oil temp engine goes bang cos you don't back off.

way to solve it is failry easy and just needs a front mount and uprated oil cooler, you won't be able to sit for hours at full throttle no mater what you do, but wil solve any heat issues with sat at those sort of speeds

Ok, got an oil temp and pressure guage so ill keep my eye on them.

Going to invest in a larger scoop and eventually a FMIC but until then guages are fine

Statements about heat and a lack of air getting into the intercooler are simply poppycock!!

These cars are fantastic if left as Subaru set them up .... **** about with them at your peril - and don't look for reasons why the engine let go!!

Everyone knows that the engine got wrecked because you pissed about with it ..... it's no good coming out with statements to try and blame the car, like, Heatsoak - MAF Sensor weak - chocolate pistons - cheap oil - cheap fuel - maps - cocklinks ............

Have to say, agree with Pete on this one. I've just come back from mid france. 120 all the way(in france) without a murmur, albeit the temp gauge went up higher than normal, but nothing outrageous and tbh approx 90-100 in uk. I've got a completely standard wagon, but i do admit, she prefers colder weather to the baking heat of france

If you **** about with the Subaru set-up, in any way, then YES your car WILL go POP!!!

Car manufacturers spend loads of cash and time testing their cars to destruction. They also test the engines in freezing cold and very hot conditions. they test them flat out for 1000's of miles.

So, doing 100mph on the Queen's highway for an hour or so, should be no problem at all, unless like what Pete say's they've been tuned which could put extra stress on components.

Modify any car at your risk.
But that risk is (most times) worth it.

Mod a car, be aware (ie understanding) of what might happen and apply preventative maintenance to minimise that risk.

If you want risk free motoring (as Pete does, most people do) then leave it stock, or buy a factory modded car (ie PPP).

We have a choice; daily drivers need to be comfortable, reliable and safe, a week-end car can afford to be a bit riskier than that (except the last bit)!

I think there is a problem with classics - certainly the P1 with high speed running. The cars are designed for sprints - caning it up and down the gears rather than continuous flat-out running and I think occassionally this can result in the cam belt skipping/jumping off the pulleys. Spoke to Mat at RCM and also Bob Rawle about this. There are also occassional cam belt tensioner failures as they are on a hydraulic tensioner which wears out I think?

100mph plus is by no means flat out in any scoob - so assume the speeds are quite excessive for when this happens.

Isn't it about the engine speed?
100 mph in 5th = about 5000/6000 rpm (I stand to be corrected)
100 in 4th is 7500+

I think you may be right about the sustained high mph (revs), but i would think Subaru would have that sorted.
I would imagine the oil-fed tesioner being suspect.

I spoke to several well respected tuners on here who argued that generic remaps, even PPP, wouldn't always be the safest option- some examples respond very well, others very poorly. Of course, tuners aren't exactly impartial, but you can see the logic; a custom map, tailored by a professional to an individual should be better/safer than the "one size fits all approach".

Ths is not a criticism of Prodrive or PPP at all! At the end of the day produce a generic map is all they can reasonably do, and there are lots of satisified customers and , of course, it's the only way you can modify and keep your warranty.

I think that is what i am saying.

Get the car modified and understand what you are letting yourself into.

I did all my own mods, but had the Expert, AndyF, dial it all in for me. I know it is on the limit. I accept that.

The PPP is a 'compromise' to one-size-fits-all' buy that and accept the position (with confidence!)
