Waiting for my 2001 STI...but a bit anxious

After numerous Subarus I've fallen in love with the Impreza. I started with a WRX wagon and currently have a classic 99 (with a TT Legacy and RX7 inbetween!).
I have ordered a 2001 STI from Japan, which arrives some time next month. I am a bit apprehensive to be honest - I test drove 2 highly modded UK cars of the same year (non-STI) and was somewhat unimpressed at the performance compared to the 99 classic I have at the moment (unmodded apart from backbox).
So I basically want anyone with a bugeye STI to assure me it'll be worth the wait! Or at least tell me how it compares to a standard classic Impreza. I'm just really worried that I'll be underwhelmed by it (the RX7 was a complete disappointment, from the moment I first sat in it). Am looking forward to having that 6 speed box and already have plans for a vortex afterburner backbox.
