Default Why is it so hard to choose oil for a Scoob ?

My 53 STi ppp is in for it's 30,000 mile (£400 breaks my heart) service on Monday and I would like to know which oil to use.

The owners manual says 5w-30. Unless you drive in extreme conditions, then it's 10w-50 to 20w-50.

A reputable Subaru Dealer "up North" says 10w-40 semi synthetic.
(Which contradicts the manual).

A reputable Subaru Performance Specialist "up North" says 15w- 50.

Numerous posts on Scoobynet and SIDC recommend 5w-40 as well as many others.

I don't want this thread to turn into the great oil slanging match, but I would like to know which grade oil suits my car best. I drive it normally round the town, normally on Duals and Motorways, and thrash it round the twisties.

I have already decided, rightly or wrongly, that I am going to use Silkolene Pro fully synthetic, so the question is - WHICH GRADE (and why) ?

Look forward to your replies.

Graeme.

I bought Silkolene pro also, as recommended by "the oilman". I have an 01 WRX which get's it's Andy F remap on Monday.

Tha oil was 5w-40. of course i have the same manual, but I don't think it does any harm to buy a dearer oil llike this for a car with 300 odd bhp. In any case, it's an insignificant amount compared to the total running/repair costs for the car as a whole.

Why don't you just give Prodrive a call and see what they say. They must be aware of any extra stresses the engine might be going through with the PPP upgrade and therefore must be in the best position to make a recommendation.

My car is not PPP'd; however I have never seen any reason not to accept the manufacturer's or dealer's recommendation.

Graeme, put 5w30 in your scoob, people recommend it, the fact is just listen to it running with a 5w30 oil in and you will understand why your changing it to a 10w40 or even a 15w50 fully synthetic.
The basic design of a subaru engine has not changed over the years, there have been alterations but even my MY00 stated that a 30 rated oil was not to be used unless in extreme cold temps and then you shouldnt drive hard (and as stated, these engines have not changed, not even better oil distribution on the wrx or even the STi unless you have a JDM and a 30 rated isnt recommended on a JDM either!)
I had a 5w30 shell helix in that car for all of 100 miles before it came out again as it wasnt doing its job (im not saying you couldnt hear the tappets but jesus they were loud )
A 40 rated oil cured that problem
(changed to a 50 rated at the service after that)

Question

Sorry Tony I must be thick today but I think you are saying put 10W40 oil in?

I am in a similar position with a 55 plate WRX UK spec car due for its 10,000 mile service and was looking around for sensible oil.

Is Silkolene Pro the best to get or are there others that are as good?

Just had my MY03 WRX serviced the other week at Roger Clark's, 50k service and cambelt, lets not mention the tensioner and idler rollers! LOL
Anyway, they used Silkolene Pro R 15w50.
Yes, thats Pro R, not S.
They are all good, but i have since bought a 5ltr of the Pro R, so i am sticking with that.
Incidentally, when i had my car serviced before by TSL, they too used a 15w50 oil, albeit a different brand, but the same grade of synthetic all the same.
The Silkolene is one of a collection of oils recommended on here all the time by various ppl, oilman being one of them.
As you will know, depends on your needs and uses, etc, etc, blah blah.
But i am happy with what i have been given.
Just a quick edit to say, oilman can supply any oil you require, pm me if you require details as i aint sure about posting website on here as it is advertising it.

its not even worth putting in a fully synthetic until you have done at least 5k miles, a 10w40 semi synthetic is probably what your dealer will put in anyway, putting a fully synthetic oil in too early will just be a waste of money and putting it in on a high mileage car is also a waste of money.

Tony

Should say that I use motul 300v 15w50 as used by subaru japan (if you ever see the STi oil they use its this )

I have an MY03 WRX PPP and have used a variety of oils from Silkolene, Millers, Motul and a few others. I found that 10W took too long to warm and I didn't like how the car ran for the first 20 or so miles, and being that the majority of most peoples journeys are below that it seems silly to compromise that. I also didn't like the hot running characteristics of 50 rated oils, feeling they restricted power a little. I would recommend 10W or 15W with 50 or higher viscocity for high mileage cars or for extreme conditions such as regular track running, but I feel that 5W40 is the ideal choice for an everyday road going Scooby. 0W is too thin by far by the way.

I have recently stumbled upon an oil made by Fuchs, who make Silkolene, at Europarts. It meets all the current spec requirements for a quality fully synthetic oil, a fact I had confirmed by oilman. It can be bought for around £30 for a 5 litre bottle, but is also available for about £86 for a 25 litre drum, making it about £16 per oil change. It's called Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL (5W40). I'm currently running a GB in the WYIOC forum to buy several of these drums and get the trade price of about £76 (£13/change).

True, but its the principal isnt it? If youre buying several 25litre polys then Id expect you to get a better price than Im getting for the one.
