Mine comes on just above the red. Manual says its when there's 9 litres left
In terms of mileage I actually know someone who decided to see how far he could get before he ran out of petrol............turns out it was 36 miles driving under normal conditions.

i've got a classic scooby and the light comes on just above the red, i've also read somewhere that there's about 30ish miles left with normal driving

Sometimes I've had 15 miles after the light came on, others 6 miles. Car just started spluttering as I got onto the petrol station forecourt - lucky or what.
Not that reliable so don't take the chance.

You seem to watch the gauge so closely that the light is redundant anyway
I have an MY02 WRX. The fuel light is circular and glows orange at low levels. Mine comes on when the needle gets in the lowest white bar (you are correct there is no red.). I have then done 25 miles before re-fuelling. In theory 2 gallons = 40-50 mile range.
I suggest you read up about fuel surge if intending to run your car on very low fuel regularly

My 02 WRX definitely has a light, but they're all different so until you know your car don't rely on it.
Last night I filled up after over 20 miles of driving with the light on, it still had over 7 Litres left in it. I once did something like 60 miles with the light on (2 consecutive services closed, don't ask!), albeit driving gently, it was just showing signs of spluttering when I made it to the petrol station. I got 59 point something litres in it that time, so it was pretty empty!
