Hello everybody, I'd like to fit an induction kit to my late classic .

The standard air box has a aftermarket pannel filter in it. But i would like to replace the whole thing but am well aware that if i do my MAF will throw a strop!

So what, if any, induction kit can be fitted and be MAF friendly??

Which classic do you have - MY98's and earlier have a "stronger more reliable" MAF and I don't think you need to worry about these as much as the MY99 and MY00

 

i did hear that the k&n(can't remember name) is maf friendly but i was also told don't really need to because the subaru air box is pretty good and unless you got cold air reaching the induction kit you could lose some power.

 

Im affraid mines a 2000 'w' so instead of it being 'strong and reliable' its 'feeble and week' !!

I think the main thing you have to do is secure/mount the MAF housing so it doesn't wobble so much and stress the MAF.

when ever i take a look at the engine bay of a highly tunned impreza, they are always running an induction kit of some discription, so they must have some benefit over std?

 

But only if you're running 350bhp plus. The view is that up until this point the stock air box provides enough cool air unless you're going for big power. And even then they partion the induction kit from the rest of the engine and make sure it gets enough cold air.

But if you want to do it then fine. I remember having a K&N on my Pug 205 GTi and it sounded really nice

 

You can change the Maf for a more robust one.......from the zx300 if i recall correctly?

 

Somewhere on here there was mention that if you buy a new MAF and it has a green dot painted on the outside edge then it is part of a new batch which is more robust.

The one I bought for myself recently did have a green dot - but I'm not sure how true this is.

 

K & N 57i induction seems to be pretty good and doesn't upset the maf, the green dot maf cartridge is better than the originals, you can only change it for a hot film type of similar specification, even then (assuming one was available) it would need an ecu remap to accomodate. Treat as a consumable and replace onec a year or every 20, 000 miles.

Another way to identify the "good" MAF is by the 4 pin connectors. The "bad" MAFs had 5.

Or upgrade to a Link ecu and do away with the maf completely! Might seem expensive at first, but then regularly replacing the maf can be costly, too.

It's also the oil used in some kits that contaminates the MAF.

The reason you see Imprezas with them on is because a lot of the Impreza driver/owners are sheep .......... they cannot think for themselves, they need to 'look good' at the Rolling Road Shoot-Out see??

Same reason CockLinks are used - to show that you are 'serious' about tuning (but of course it's all an illusion - it's all done for show!)

And show alone ...................

Personally that 'show' does not make we want to face a bill for a new engine following the engine damage that will eventually occur - but, it's your chavmobile not mine!

I use an Apexi ik which isn't oiled and comes with a brace to attach it to the bulkhead to decrease the amount of vibration (on a my 93wrx).
