NEWBIE - Pics of car
Hi all
Have just signed up. Hoping to be a regular on the forum and hopefully a regular worthwhile contributor..
However, I don’t know anything much about Subaru’s so am looking forward to learning lots from you educated folk
Anyways, I’m presently an R32 GTR owner and as I type this, my Subaru is on it’s way from Japan. This is the car. Apparently it’s an STI Ver 5 1999 and had only one owner to date.
Don’t know if it has any mods except that it has a very fancy stereo, boost gauge and turbo timer. I’m betting that when it lands on our shores the stereo will disappear at the port.. so can just forget about that one.
Price worked out to about GBP5,950 BEFORE SHIPPING (fair?)
Thanks guys…

Should arrive around 25-August. Yeah they are common... in Japan and maybe the UK.
Don't see too many of these examples down here in SOUTH AFRICA! I chose to go for a GC8 chassis as i'm still a believer that this was more of a classic.. Just my opinion. Don't know a heck of a lot about the Subaru scene.
Can anybody comment on the reliability of the engine in this version as compared to later GDA and GDB? Any quirks or perculiarities? Before i get flamed, yes i will do a search as well.

Was planning on using it as a daily drive if the car is friendly enough to do so. Have a stock R32 GTR with exhaust and other small bits that i'm planning to take to stage 1 and run at 1 bar boost.
What are popular mods on the STI? Obviously wanna have a nice exhaust but is aftermarket turbo required, or is stock turbo good enough to run at 0.9 bar (assuming the stock car is at 0.7 bar??)?
Essentially want a reliable daily car, and if i can safely give the car a LITTLE teency tweak here and there without significantly compromising reliability then why not?

Probably best to get it mapped for the fuel over there.

best i can get my hands on where i live at is 95RON. Probably then use NOS or NF 6PT octane booster. Note that i am in Johannesburg which is 1,800kms above sea-level. The higher altitude does compensate slightly and allows us to use a lower octane fuel without detonating. Running my R32 GTR on 95RON pump fuel without any real fuss (no detonation at all at 0.7bar), but it still has the original Jap fuel map which is VERY VERY RICH so i guess that does help a little also.
However, there are many Scooby's running around here on 95RON.
We used to only have 93RON (in Johannesburg). The manufacturer spec did require that timing be retarded and few other changes (compared to o/seas markets) before the car could be sold here. This compromised power output by a few kW. Since Jan this year 95RON became avail. Coastal cities have 97RON avail.
This is the GTR

Your turbo will be fine. DO the normal route of changing full exhaust, panel filter and remap - should give you about 320bhp imo.
