Question

From posts in response to a question (the wheels that slip to the wheels that grip - a few days ago), my own response included, its clear that some of us can't agree on the exact set up of differentials, viscous couplings etc. on the UK standard Turbo.
I though I'd read that there is a viscous coupling working between the front and rear drive, it appears maybe not.

Who knows the gospel? Can you enlighten those of us who are misinformed please, what type of device is employed on the front, centre and rear diffs. Which of them feature limited slip devices, and what type of LSD - mechanical or viscous coupling?

Cool

For manual cars:

Front = free
Centre = viscous LSD
Rear = viscous LSD

Applies to all UK spec 4WD turbo Imprezas, inc prior model years.

Wahey, Clarence is back.....
How are ya?

type R has a mechanical LSD at the rear and a viscous front LSD. (though if Clarence tells me I'm wrong I'd believe him).

Aha! Glad my memory is still operating, I thought this was the case, but self doubt crept in when I saw responses to my post...

Cheers.

Here goes with my opinion, maybe wrong again but...

I also remember reading that if the handbrake is used to lock up the rears, the centre diff disengages. Dunno how this works, but I do know you can lock up rears, yet keep fronts going (done it, many times).

I don't however think you can keep drive to the fronts while you're doing this as you would in a front wheel drive car, but never actually tried it for fear of busting something.

I trust you're talking about using the handbrake for p***ing about having fun in the wet or loose rather than for real on public roads?!

I'm ok, thx .
& u?
Just had a look at the info on the New Age STi, seems that the STi-RA has mechanical LSD at rear & viscous at the front.
Not sure abt the GC Type-R, maybe the same but maybe not.
Incidentally, the new RA can be had with Brembo brakes with 17" wheels, but you'll lose the adjustable torque split. Bonus is it'll come with ABS. The new RA also has same gear ratios as compared with the STi.
