Mine is now around the 290bhp mark, and was just interested to know what is the most powerful UK300 around and what has been done to it. Really I want to keep with the standard gearbox, so also whos got the most powerful UK300 on the standard gearbox?

Is a UK300 not the same as a WRX engine and drivetrain wise

You could say that. There was a piece of Scotts TD05 floating around inside the engine.

Rebuild.

Scott's car went through various guises, with the 2L engine IIRC he was running mid 380's bhp (at two different rollers) before he fitted new headers, got another remap, and holed no 4 piston on the way to a RR day to find out if he'd cracked the 400 mark. With a hole in one piston and running like a dog it still made 346 (IIRC) on PE's rollers. It then did grow a 2.5 conversion, but there were problems with that. I did lose touch with the car around then as I moved away from being 100yards down the road from him!

I can't remember the exact sequence, but he did manage to destroy 3rd gear with the 2L lump before that broke, and then upon getting a better gear set IIRC he knackered the rear diff. He was also running an uprated clutch (Exeedy from memory)

However, as Rich said, great car when it was working well, although I only once drove it and not for very far.

Well my new STi heads, wiseco pistons, STi crankshaft, STi manifold, steel con rods, competition bearing set, kevlar cam belt, and MD321T blower should make it pretty much bullet proof.

With an air intake temp of 52 degrees C, it saw 340.4 at the wheels. 337.7 lb/ft too. With a transmission loss of say 23% that equates to 441 BHP and 439 lb/ft of torque, on a HOT day.

You could say I'm quite looking forward to picking it up in the morning. Hopefully I'll see it through the day!

It was ok when it was running The 2.5 was the worse thing i ever did to it, i should of stayed with a stronger 2 litre. But in the end after 6 years of Impreza ownership i'd had enough, bought a 150bhp MX5 Sport and had 10 times more fun driving that than a 400bhp understeering barge

Well I made it through the day - just!

That car is FAST! Its pretty mental having all four wheels spinning whilst changing from 3rd to 4th!

So currenty at about 440bhp, I reckon I should see some more when I downsize exhausts. Bob Rawle has suggested a 3" all the way through to give me more back pressure.

He also reckons after 2-3k miles we could up the boost a bit more.

Its still got thin cylinder liners though......its far from bullet broof.

Be careful, and dont get greedy with the boost is all ill say.

So at about what power output are people changing their standard gearboxes? Has anyone wrecked one due to too much power?

I'd say an "average" figure is somewhere around 330-340lbft purely based on anecdotal evidence. There are people who have broken them at around 300lbft (come to that, there have been failures at standard power, but they're rare), there are a few who have gone much higher and not broken them. Some of it is how you drive it, some of it is probably luck.

My "rule of thumb" would be that generally speaking a TD04 turbo won't give you enough torque to break things often, you'll probably be alright with e.g. VF34 or similar unless you've pushed the turbo very hard, but well tuned TD05s or bigger and you're trusting to luck and/or gentle treatment.

I was always a bit reluctant to push more than 300 bhp as didn't want to change the gearbox, but I reckon I could push a few more horses out of it safely. Any suggestions what to do next????

Already done
Ecutek remap
Full De cat Blitz exhaust
Ram Air induction kit

Will an STI Top mount intercooler free up much power?
