A friend of mine has been quoted for a chip upgrade for his UK spec MY00. The chip in question is a UNICHIP. I'm no expert but I do read the various threads related to chipping, but the offer in question quotes no other modifications other than a chip upgrade and Sti exhaust, surely it is not possible to get 310 BHP from this upgrade?.

The best performance I have seen or heard of from a chip upgrade is in the region of 330BHP, but this is for an STi. I'm not going to mention any companies as I do not want to get into a slanging match, but I'm concerned that my friend is being 'sold a line' and if he goes ahead will either waste his money (approx 1500 quids) and not get the performance promised, or nacker his engine and not be able to claim on the warranty (or both). It has even been mentioned to him by the same people that with a few extra mods (non of which I think are engine related) the performance can go up to as much as 360 BHP. I'm not aware of any scoobs running to that figure!!!

My friend will be reading this thread some time tomorrow, so any wise words from the ECU expoerts among us would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks.

Dave

It's Time to meet the MUPPETs

MY00 UK spec + full 31/2" zorst induction kit and fully mapped Link is at most going to kick out about 260-270 BHP

so this must be one hell of a chip !!

Its time to come on down !!

What a load of tosh. Company got 3 initials, starting with T, ending in I, by any chance ???.

310bhp out of a UK car, with no internal work, is either dreamland, or a disaster waiting to happen.

Powerstation charge about £600 for a Unichip, fitted, and you certainly wouldn't fit a STi exhaust, if you want the max from an exhaust.

Speak to either BR Developments (Link) or Powerstation for the Unichip (they both have links to their sites on the bbs) and they will give you realistic infomation.

Mark.

It's costing me a lotta money including a lot of internal work - and I won't get 360hp.

They could do it - it'd last probably 5 secs on full boost. The internals will not take it.

Look at any decent tuner in the world for the scoob. Not possible.

Or, get them to do it with a written 3 year guarantee. Bet they don't.

Cool

david,

I don't suppose the company in question is based anywhere near Bristol... or Thornbury, perchance?

Moray, I coudn't possibley comment...

More information has come through though, the company in question is now saying 290 is more reasonable and with major internal mods they expect 350+ (£4,500 though!)

However, my friend has now spoken to Bob Rawle, nuff siad.

Oh dear this does sound like a company, possibly in the South West

Of course the £4500 is + vat?

There is no way that u can get a uk car to produce that sort of power for that money - even internal

On an sti - it costs at least £10k to get to this level

So someones definately living in fantasy land - this surprises me as the 'possible' tuner in question? - has a fairly 'conservative' rolling road

Steve,
The possible tuner, alledgly, who has a rolling road, maybe, well, isn't conservative. I know a few people who have had work done at another establishment more local to myself and then go to said establishment for a "pub figures" power run. I have a very nice plot myself that I wouldn't attempt to pretend to be realistic. But saying that, not as bad as some more London based establishments. Maybe.

Jon,
I understand that the new Flymo can have an upgraded blower fitted, but I'm unsure of the trim, but I hear it spools earlier. Maybe it has ball bearings

Cheers

Ian

Question

Why is that power extraction is so difficult with Subarus. Remember a few years ago when the Escort cosworth was in production people were getting 270 odd out of it with just a chip and over 300 with a different injection system. Then there were the ones that knocked out almost 600bhp. You never hear of an Impreza with that much do you. What is the reason for this, and by the way I dont like Fords at all and I was only using them for an example.

Exclamation

The major factor AFAIK is that the Impreza engine does not have the same margins built in from scratch as the Cossie lumps to allow such gains. However, it does have a relative advantage in reliability

OK - I have not had a power run, I was just informed that the expected power out of an sti5 was around 265hp, nowhere near 280hp, which is reasonable

JonHughes

Whats happening with your engine?

The reason Cosworth engines are so tunable stems from their motor sport origins. The engine was designed to run 500bhp in british Tour Cars in the 80's (this is before it went gay and banned turbos).
The road engine is basically a detuned race engine. Mike R's car (it should produce 500bhp if he find a dyno that can cope with it)still has stock internals and stock gear box. The Scooby engine was only designed to run 300bhp ish for rallying.

Couldnt help but laugh at your comment on the BTCC.I can understand your point though because for the brief period when the Calibra turbo was a works rally car Opel could not extract more than 260bhp from the engine.
