Oil change

Only bit that some don't know is the "priming" of the filter, or filling it with oil before fitting. Top it up 3-4 times as the level drops as the oil penetrates the filter gauze. Some remove the crank position sensor before the post change start-up to circulate fresh oil around before the engine is put under load, but others say that the engine is under more load when turning on the starter motor with a cavitating oil pump than when just sat on idle. Other than that, the usual applies. Warm the engine through, remove sump nut and drain. Go for a cup of tea. Remove old filter and fit new primed one. Refit sump nut with new compression washer. Fill with fresh oil (4.5l) until on lower mark of dipstick. Start and run on idle for 10 mins then stop and go for another cup of tea. Check level and top up to bang in between the 2 marks on the stick. Start up and take out for a small drive, keeping under boost. Check for leaks on return and recheck level after another 10 mins. Refit undertray and stuff. Look smug having saved yourself £80

I think even Mr Lewis himself even primes the filter these days!
Where is the old boy anyway??
To busy posting under all his other bogus user names.

Stand for at least 30seconds before checking level though, after tuning off and after filling.
Fill with fresh oil (4.5l) until on lower mark of dipstick.
This applies to any car, Subarus aren't special.

I am Based near East Grinstead, is there anyone close enough to come and show me how to do it so I can learn properly, happy to pay for the time and provide the tea and biscuits.

There is no need to "prime" the filter, unless it takes you several days to undo the oil filter and put the new one one.
Same with any car:
*Just drain the oil.
*remove the filter.
*refit new filter with a little oil on the gasket.
*replace sump plug.
*fill with required amount of oil.
*start engine, run for 1 minute
*turn off engine
*let the oil settle
*check level.
Its irrelivant how much oil you get through the filter its still got to get up into the engine and the oil pump will take less than a second to fill the filter.

YES prime the oil filter,FFS,it only takes a couple of minutes, why wouldnt you ?
It would take more than a "second" to fill an oil filter via the pump,in fact how did you come to that conclusion?
Forget about taking off the crank sensor, you may throw up a CEL light.
Just do as corradoboy has said and you should be fine.

98% of all other cars do not oil filter priming.
1% being pre 1992 (1967 onwards) Rover V8 (although, try doing it on a TVR Chimera...messy...seing it's upside down ). This is official as Rover did issue a TSB (technical service Bulletin) back in teh 70/80's.
The other 1% is based on conjecture spouted about Subarus on this very Fourm, as Subaru have NEVER issued a TSB on oil filter priming

Prime it if you want, don't prime it if you don't want.
Either way it really doesn't make any difference whatsoever. Personally I do not pre-fill the oil filter.

As for tapping the plug I did say its not the best idea and the combustion exhaust would draw most of the ****e out, one of the advanges of the flat four is the swarf isnt dropping down to stick on the piston, its falling down towards the exhaust valves.
