i've seen the yellow cone before. it's a pneumatic silencer. my guess is it's some kind of flow/pressure regulator

if it's for boost control it's either doing one or two things.....

1) it's bleeding off the pressure allowing the boost to remain higher than the boost limit

2) i'ts slowing the flow of pressure down thats going to the boost solenoid to allow the boost to run for longer

it's certainly not a subaru piece of equipment (more an industrial piece.......maybe festo or smc) is there any numbers on there??

i think the fcr stands for 'flow control restrictor' in other words it's i flow restrictor valve. screwing in the brass screw will slow down the flow of air going to wherever it's piped into (i assume your boost valve). if you turn it anticlockwise it'll let the pressure build more quicker, giving more time for the boost valve to react (assuming it's piped to this). this should cure the fuel cut. if you've added a decat then you'll get quicker spool up>quicker boost>less time for solenoid to react

hope this helps matey !!

i don't think that the valve you have on is something that people use, but is similar. what you have on is something that is used for industrial purposes (ie on machines). normally you would see something like a 'dawes device' or a 'bleed valve' where as the full boost pressure is never really seen by the ecu (in other words you trick the ecu into thinking it's got the right/safe amount of boost, when really you're boosting alot higher)

Cheers
Mark

sorry if my descriptions are a little vague. i'm an design engineer so i see/use these type of valves fairly frequent

would you take it off? leave it on? have a go at adjusting the screw or take it to a RR to see what the car is doing.

the car has been in the UK from new, so i dont think it was put on in japan

i would hazard a guess at turning the screw anticlockwise. this shoud 'in theory' let the pressure bleed quicker to the boost valve therefore tricking it less !!! a rolling road is always a good idea. do you know what boost you are running?

yes the T pice that comes off theactuator pipe, the end that goes to the standard boost controler on the left of the engine, this also has a T pice in and then goes to the yellow come thing.

here is a link to your engine pic Steppler

its definately a bleed valve, a very crude way of upping the boost, clockwise (screw in) will decrease the boost , anticlockwise will up the boost.

Have a look at your ECU and see if theres a little black box soldered to the wires with ABC written on it (fuel cut defender), this usually indicates a superchips installiation.

If there is, a lot of people will tell you (mostly from what they've read) that a superchips install is a no no for a scoob, but if its fitted correctly and the boost isnt too hiigh it should be fine. I had one fitted to a MY01 running 300 BHP ,and 3 owners later the car is still running well with no problems at all

hope this helps

Phil

where will the ecu be in the car?

dont think i have a fuel cut, as after fitting the downpipe yesterday, i hit what was like a boost limiter.

is it worth taking it complety out or just turn down?

the ECU is in the passenger foot well under the carpet.

do you have a boost gauge fitted ?
What year/model is the car ?

to be honest , its best not to mess with it unless you can see what boost your car is running. If your unsure, get it booked into a scoob specialist and ask them to set the boost for you as they'll be able to listen for any det aswell

Mine was a MY01 with all cats removed (up/down/centre) and peaked at 19 psi and I never had fuel cut

my99 sti

full 3" decat (revulition)
k&n pannel filter

i only noticed it was on the car yesterday when fitting the downpipe, and on the way home it felt like i hit a boost cut when giving it some beans.

going to wind it clockwise(turn it down) to run lower boost just in case i think.

do you know of a web site of the people who make these?
