Default Rip off?!!!!!!

Hi all been on the phone with a scooby dealer, car is up for £6995 I looked in parkers and the price they recomend is £5,600, So I call the dealer and ask him why there car is so over priced. He says it is because "they dont take into account that it has an MOT, 1yr warranty, years roadside assistance, 48,000 mile service and new front discs."

Is this a load of crap dealer talk or is it true?

Thanks in advance.

So look elsewhere. There are plenty of Imprezas for sale. If no one buys it then he will drop the price. If someone buys it, he had priced it correctly.

Worth about £600 real money i reckon (warranty £350,assistance £70, disks £180) make sure he has fitted subaru disks too, dealers tend to fit any old <self cencored> to used cars out of manufacture warranty, if he hasnt then add no value to them.

Obviously a car dealer is always going to ask for more than what the cars worth. For 2 reasons

1) He sells it for the asking price, and makes a handsome profit
2) When a serious customer want's the car, he has room for a discount, so he still makes a profit, and the buyer gets money off the asking price.

Is he meant to sell the car for what he paid for it? He is allowed to make money?
If I were you, I'd go down and look at the car, get a test drive, and then haggle over the price. If he thinks you are serious, he'll soon drop his price. Or, as said above, look elsewhere. A quick search on Auto Trader, you'll find millions of Subaru's for sale.

The warranty I had with my car (Subaru Warranty plus Roadside assistance) cost the previous owner £960.....

48k service should be the cambelt depending on MY - Plus as others have said - it's a main dealer!!

I looked up same model on the internet-a few months older, 4k more miles but a grand less- also it is from a Subaru main dealer.

Its a 51 should the cambelt have been done?

All dealers of secondhand cars look for at least 1000-1500 profit on all cars that is why cars are more expensive in garages
Look for a nice private sale there are loads out there

A recommended price in parkers etc take into account proper servicing intervals. You can't add value to a car by having these things done!!

If it hasn't been done you can take money off the book price, but not the other way round!!

All dealers have to include 3 month warranty! (I think I am right on that).

Look else where though, loads about but finding a good example is the key!

Warranty & roadside cover will cost more but not the mark up he is asking (going on your figures)

Must be a dealer! lol....... The warrenty they supply in most cases is worth **** all due to the terms and conditions,The best option is to save yourself anything upto £2k by buying private, If you get a good one(and you should) you will have 2 grand in your pocket, If you get a bad one 2 grand should just about put it right! lol, However MR car dealer with all his bull**** waffle is 2K out of pocket.......................... I know what makes sense!

Parkers are ok as a rough guide, They do tend to quote higher values than the trade "Bible", So if the trader has it up for more than Parkers then he is Ripping you off!
Do what i did a few years ago, I went to look at a Rover vitesse at a motor dealer near me, he laid on the "dealer chat" telling me that the one he had was superb, etc, Now dont get me wrong it was ok, it was a P reg and had 80k on the clock,The parkers guide had it at @£1700 for top money, he had it up for £2995............ Needless to say he didnt except my offer! , he did however take my contact details!

About 3 weeks later i find a minter for sale in the free ads, on a T reg 50k full rover history, only just had it's first MOT, The asking price £3000

My offer £2000, which after a week the bloke accepted, A 3 year old, 200 Bhp car with all the bells and whistles for 2 grand!

Anyway getting back to the point in hand......... About 3 weeks later i get a call from the car dealer with the p reg Rover Vitesse, Could i go along and see him if i was still interested! lol..... And yes i did go as he was only up the road from me, and yes he was well pissed off......
He had that car for nearly 7 months before it went off his forecourt.......

Hope this helps!

Parkers Price Guide and CAP Black Book were both published by the same company and their trade prices were virtually identical.

Rather stupid comment,
How do you know if the guy can afford it or not?
IT may not be a question of whether he can afford it or not, it's a question of whether it's worth the money, probably not in my opinion

to be fair pal it probably needed a new mot ticket on it , so then it prob needed the breaks doing to pass the mot ow many dealers do u see offering a car on forcourt with a partial mot, also them servicing it is down to them , they i presume they have the technitions round the back . which all this work would have cost them as a company peanuts to be fair also , the warranty they will be in cahoots/ partnership with the company supplying it . they all **** in the same pot mate if u think its over priced then it prob is . so y shud u have to foot the bill .

FWIW if someone phoned me up and complained my car was overpriced i'd be inclined to put the price up just to pee them off.
You are allowed to advertise whatever price you want, the market will decide whether it sells or not.

I can afford it but whats the point in paying too much money just because i can?

its a GX not WRX thats why im not paying the extra as it will lose the value quicker.

Also should the cambelt have been done at 48K 51 plate non-turbo.

P.S the garage is a Subaru Dealer

The dealer sounds like a pleb (Name and SHAME!).. The trade price will be assuming the dealer is selling with a years MOT and atleast some form of warranty, and to be fair the warranty is rarely worth the paper its printed on..

Also if this dealer genuinely thinks selling cars with MOT's is something special he is seriously a ***!
