Unhappy

At the risk of getting totally flamed off the board, I'll admit to working in the insurance industry. However, rest assured that I'm not robbing anyone - my lowly wage means I'm restricted to a Legacy Turbo (92) rather than an Impreza. I too am getting stung on my renewal premium - I paid £650 fully comp last year with Privilidge and they demanded a £250 security system too. I am dreading my renewal, due in December. Quotes so far have ranged from £700 up to £1700 (for real). May have to go with Direct Line who quoted £415 TPFT.

Anyway, the original question was "why have rates gone up?" First of all, forget New York. Rates were soaring way before that. The fact is that some years ago, there was money to be made in insurance. That attracted new companies into the market. This meant there was more competition and rates fell. At about the same time, the whole joy-riding of Escort Cossies thing was getting out of control, so insurers tried to put rates up, but couldn't, as they knew they'd loose business to competitors. As a result they had several years when they lost a lot of money on car insurance business. Then, and this is the main point, the UK started getting just like America in that we've started sueing for everything. Personal injury claims have rocketed over the past five years. For some companies this was the last straw and meant that instead of new companies joining the market, companies left the market. That means less competition, which means rates can "harden" to use the parlance (i.e. go up). This is due in part to cover losses made in previous years and partly to cover clims being made now.

The fact is that whilst there are very many hard-working, responsible drivers out there, the premiums reflect the risk of the whole market, and not of you as an individual. (It's also a fact that home insurance is really profitable, as is the legal cover that some companies give you, as is extended warranty cover. I know the sums are different, but that's where we're really being robbed). Also, uninsured drivers add about 10% to everyone's premium - insurance companies pay into a fund to cover claims caused by uninsured drivers. Again, this money has to come from somewhere, and guess what? It comes from everyone who does pay for their insurance.

I like the Kiwi idea of getting TP cover with your road tax, but if the government is underwriting it, then the money for TP claims will come from somewhere - i.e. your income tax.

I'm not saying any of the above is justified or not, just trying to present the whole picture.

Also, just reread the thread - 50% hikes are pretty ridiculous. This is just evidence they they don't want to insure you/ your car.
:0(

There was I looking forward to a cracking weekend of a trackday, fireworks and a bit of booze, without a care in the world, bimbling along happily in my own little world....until I opened my post and read my insurance renewal - the ******* thing has INCREASED by £500
Now, dont get me wrong, insurance is a must have, but what the **** is going on? How the hell can insurance go up from £1000 to £1500? Did I move to Beirut? NO Did I get anymore points in the last 12 months? NO Have I had an accident? NO
So what am I guilty of??? What the hell justifies the need for a 50% hike in my premium?
I dont like posts that slag of the insurance world, 'cos I know and respect some of the guys from this bbs that work in the industry but for ***** sake whats going on?
Perhaps some of these guys, RUM I'm looking at you now, can shed some light on the subject?
It makes me wonder whether its all worthwhile, working your **** off 70hrs a week, just for something like this to happen... when I might as well just not bother getting insured and take the risk* (its only a £1000 fine if you get caught, so I'd still be up by £500 )

I'm currently insured with ASA via AXA, so if anyone of similar circumstance to me has a cheaper quote or can recommend peeps then please let me know....
One thing is for certain - this looks like being the final nail in scoobies' coffin

*DISCLAIMER - I would never drive without cover - those who do so are scum and must die.

You simply can't win with insurance. Unless its a total write -off its usually not worth claiming because they'll shaft you in the long run.

Middle class types like us on the bbs just have to put up with it. If your rich it doesnt matter and if you re from the underclass you simply dont bother with insurance/tax/mot/ etc as the magistrate will only tell you off l;ightly and youve got a record for GBH and burglary anyway.

Insurance, globally, is set to increase by 40% due to the New York loss.

We should all prepare for some major hikes.

I had exactly the same last year - insured with hill house hammond, underwritten by Axa. Went from 655 quid to 1203 quid (!)

Phoned around, got quotes for around 800-900.

Then I tried Axa direct (axamotor.co.uk) and got last year's insurance for 750. A warning: Axa Direct do not allow many mods, so they're not great if you're into that sort of thing.

Try Greenlight and Adrian Flux, as well as Tom @ Schofields!

Nick.

Cool

I must be the exception because my insurance has gone down £255 since last year and the only difference is I am a year older (had full NCB last year too)

Last year with AXA through a broker I was paying £870 and this year through Hastings Direct I am paying £615. Standard MY00, 28, Full NCB, Clean Licence, parked on a drive in a surrey postcode.

I was expecting it to be over a £1000 this year after all the talk of insurance prices rising and like you was seriously thinking or getting rid of the scoob.

Insurance going up because of the New York tradegy.

Why?

That is what insurance is all about. The company/companies that pay the insurance premium for the World Trade Centre have probably been paying millions of dollars since the towers were built, and the inurance company have collected this money happily as payment for cover. So what the f4ck happens to this money? As soon as the tragedy occurs then everyone pays even more.

I worked out recently that I've payed over £18,000 in insurance cover and yes, I know I've had 'cover' for it but what else?

I only had to claim once (legitimately), and was subject to astonishing incompetency and reluctance on behalf of the company (and I'm sorry to say that it seems most of them are the same).

Insurance, it makes my blood boil. Rum, you're a top man and none of this is aimed at your good self, it's just one of those things that instantly makes me lose my cool.

The national 'average' fine for no car insurance?

£80

Got to be worth looking at don't you think?

Richard,
Posted last week. My renewal on an import 22B is 2 weeks away. Last year I had the car insured on a restricted mileage policy with Axa (through brokers) and it was over a grand. This year I've had a quote for under £900 from Norwich Union Direct.

You've got to watch them insurance companys they will put your premium up on renewal because not alot of people can be bothered ringing around trying to get a better price..

Example: My mum drives a BMW M3 and last renewal the price went up by £400 for no reason, she hadn't claimed, full NCD, 46 yrs old and she was going to pay it so I phoned around a few companys and ended up getting it £100 cheaper than the year before.

It pays to shop around but before changing companys get a few quotes then go back to your existing insurers and tell them the quotes and see what they can do...

its ******* outrageous

best quote was £904 with Greenlight with a £350 excess after my insurance company wanted to up it from £800 to £1506, again no points, not moved , no accident and when I phoned them to ask for a cover note they had the cheek to re-quote at £924.00, asked why this couldnt have been done at renewal as their letter said "this is the lowest quote we could find" bollox!!
they are all the same money grabbing greedy *******s, insurance companies should not be allowed to float and should not pay dividends.

Being in Germany and serving the Queen, we are somewhat restricted to our choices of Insurer; i.e a German company who insure on the basis of a cars power (expensive for scoobs) or with NU. Expensive cos they have the market sown up.

I'm 30 yrs old, I have 2 yr no claims, (ex wife crashed last car for me)I have no speed convictions, £500 excess and a premium of £1800. Its also a standard UK car no mods.

I argued the toss with NU when they hiked my premium up from £1200 to close on £2000. They reduced it by £200 to £1800. The excuse they used was that "There had been a spate of flooding causing extra claims to be created." Not in bloody Germany there weren't!

What's an average quote in Uk for a standard car??

I went with Privilege and they tried on the Tracker requirement, but backed down to a Cat1 alarm system (helluva lot cheaper!) for my 97 Turbo.
For the record, my policy was renewed in August and had gone down by nearly £100 to ~ £650(42yr old geezer with full no-claims and clean driving record - no cameras where I live, thank god!)

My cheapest insurance last year was through.....

wait for it... directline.com

almost to boring maybe, however my standard MY00 turbo
was £724..not bad.

Also in there drop down list is P1, EvoVI etc... whicj surprised me. I guess those with modified cars may not be so welcome.

Also allows you to get an instant quote & cover...so
if you have not tried, its worth a go.

Good luck

I have recently insured my standard MY01 through Privilege.

I got a quote from the web site for £567.
I then rang up to do the deal and was asked to part with £780???
Apparently the web site is so "efficient" that they can afford to knock £213 off the cost. I was advised to return to the web site to do the deal. To date I have not spotted the catch. the paperwork all seems OK.

I'm sorry if some of the other users on this BBs are 'in the insurance business', but basically the insurance business in this country is "legalised robbery", is it any wonder that so many people (normally the ones who decide to bounce off your car!) are un-insured because they can't afford the premiums?
Why the UK doesn't wake-up and have a similar system to New Zealand, if i'm correct, the system there operates thus:
a) EVERYONE buys a bog standard third party insurance policy from the post office (underwritten by the government).
b) you buy additional cover to protect your investment...

Simple.. everyone has the bare minimum of insurance and thus insurance companies have to compete.. unlike the cartel we have in the UK.

The excuse of the NY tragedy increasing premiums really sucks...
insurance companies are quite happy sitting there extracting money from punters, year after year, with no payout.. and then (surprisingly!?) they have to pay out (for a totally un-related risk), they cry and then hike the premiums again!
Grrrrr!
