Help - Cant see speedo!!!

on my cavalier sri the needles are illuminated by the bulbs.you could always change then to leds if you know how to solder.these are for vauxhall but the ideas the same,its only a bulb holder.

I bought my 94 MR2 back in April/May time and since putting the clocks back this is the first real time I have used it at night.
Coming back from the Trafford Centre last night, and at 75mph I cant see the needle on my speedo. The rev counter needle is bright orange, but the speedo one seems to fade to nothing at the end. Below 60mph it is bearable, but over this it is annoying.
Anyone know how speedo needles work, with regards to bulbs etc?
