Thumbs up De-cat downpipe fitted today

Well I finally got round to getting this fitted, I must admit I was somewhat sceptical about the difference it would make to the car.

So off I trotted to API with pipe in tow, saw Nathan and the guys seemed busy so I got to work by starting to heat wrap the pipe.

Anyway I finally get the pipe fitted and look forward to the drive back to Cov.

Wow, what a difference, the engine is far more free revving and smoother
and pulls a lot harder and quicker through the gears.

So basically if your thinking about it and holding back, don't !!

As usual a big thankyou to Nathan and the boys at API
Oh, and to David for getting me in

Yep, I had a sports cat DP and decat centre section installed on my MY99 and I was sceptical about the improvements brfore the remap, but I there was a definate improvement, particularly in low down spool up and power. I'm having a remap son, so hopefully it'll be even better after that.

Yeah, I'm now starting to think about a bigger Turbo

The car currently has a td04 (Wagon) and it's spooling so bloody quick
that I can't seem to change gear quick enough before it red lines.

I need something with a bit more lag to give me more time

Don't forget to wrap them !!

Yet more on the slippy slope of mods....

Try a TD05 18g./Apexi FC
Then the injectors
Fuel system
Breathers
FMIC
Ported headers
Then there's the suspension...

But you will have great fun doing it and in the end product!

Bit like this:
http://www.dropshots.com/day.php?use...1&ctime=004534

API did some work to my engine 2 years ago and it is perfect today still.

Stupid question......

But I had a decat downpipe fitted and was very pleased with the results car is a MY00ppp. Again havent had remap done yet as not hitting fuel cut but certainly noticed a difference in pickup and noise.

So the question.....my downpipe is not wrapped so should I get this done?

Any info much appreciated, thanks

you probably gained a few extra bhp

wrap the downpipe to keep the gasses hot, recommended

I wrapped my downpipe because of the advice from Harvey, he probally knows more about heat management than most on here.

Anyway I'm not going to bore you with too much detail, but think of the
exhaust gases as a fluid, the hotter the fluid the faster it flows.

The turbo will spool around 100/200 rpm sooner and you have the added
benefit of reducing under bonnet tempratures, which in turn reduces charge temps giving more power.

Heat management is one of the most effective ways of increasing bhp

Damn, just had a downpipe fitted. While the up-pipe & headers were wrapped, the downpipe wasn't. Didn't realise it would make such a difference. Can this be done while it's on?

Doesn't make "that" much difference IMO...the lack of a cat giving less back pressure behind the turbo - now that does make a big difference.

We need a definitive answer here. Okay for those having one fitted it makes sense to wrap it, but is it worth the hassle of removing it to wrap it? Are the gains enough to justify the hassle of having it done?

My downpipe is already wrapped, is it advisable to get the up pipe done as well, or is the downpipe the important one?

If you have it already fitted, personally I wouldn't bother. Of course you'll gain the odd horse here and there, but unless you have the time on your hands and a pit/ramp to do at your leisure feel free.

If the downpipe had to be removed for some other reason (turbo swap, clutch, or some engine out job etc.) then I'd do it then.

Up-pipe and headers are more important as that's where you want to keep the heat in the exhaust gases to drive the turbo, but even then your only talking 1 or 2 horses.

Sorry, my car is a my94 WRX wagon.

No issues with overboost or fuel cut etc, the map is pretty mild on these
so plenty of tolerence, if I had an STI type R or RA etc, then yes I would
remap after fitting as they are far more on the edge.

OK, that's fair enough. I'll leave it as is then, until i (can afford to) get other work done. Should i be fortunate enough too.

£4300 spent in 7 months of ownership, i can't spend anymore, i'll get shot.

Gaz: A wrapped down pipe is nice to have but not essential and can be done when other work is being done affecting, headers, up-pipe, turbo etc.
Removing and refitting the D/P is probably only 30 mins maximum but wrapping could take a little longer.

New age car? (01 onwards) If so, the CEL is being flashed by the ECU because it knows one of the cats is missing/not working properly. You need a CEL fix. Speak to your local specialist, its a very simple job. Alternatively get the car remapped now and benefit fully from the exhaust mods and loose the CEL in a single stroke!!

If you've a remap planned, that will remove the CEL. It's a light warning about the O2 sensor, because you've removed the cats. Mine came on recently when decatting after about 15 mins, but AndyF removed it when it was mapped.

Alternatively, Hayward & Scott do CEL fixes.

Your car will probably go into "Limp mode" too. To protect everything.

Thanks. It's an 03 by the way.

It's not going to cause any damage though is it ?

What do you mean by limp mode ! It seems fine at the moment !

No, it shouldn't do. However, as the CEL light is illuminated already, if anything else goes wrong you'll be none the wiser! Limp home mode IIRC is when the car limits you to 4k rpm and halves the boost availalble pending the problem that caused the CEL being rectified.
