Rebuild and remap is probably the best, depends on how much damage there is to the engine, you could source a second hand engine but you dont know whats been done to that either unless its a recon one from somewhere reputable.
API may be a good place to get in touch with to see what your mates options are

Let me guess...60,000-70.000 miles?

As above, give Api a call. Hopefully your friends wise decison to get it towed rather than try to nurse it home may mean that costs are kept down Unless he's into DIY rebuilds

As a worse case, It'll probably be a failed or worn big end bearing, and it'll probably need a new crank as well if it is the case, which is a relative routine thing on Subaru engines. If it is this, also get the fueling and ignition system checked over. P1s are just as prone to these problems, which is why re-maps are recommended.

1) Buy him a consolation beer
2) Speak to David at API for the expert line.
3) You might need to get the rounds in for a while after! APi are very competitive price wise, but any engine rebuild work is not going to come cheap!

Are P1 engines prone to blowing up at that milage?? Excuse my ignorance, but why's that??

There seems to be a trend. Although a number of 98-00 year scoobs have a similar habit.

Usually its put down to running more BHP and UK fuel. With possible airflow sensor (MAF) problems thrown in to exasperate the issue.

It's basically running on an STi V map with UK fuel. I'm informed there is a brouqet (sp?) in the fuel tank to offset the lower RON petrol in the UK. These tend to give out around the 60k mark, meaning the car is more susceptible to det on the lower RON fuel.

Some let go well before that, others go past 100k without an issue.

Also, it can be due to the usual reasons a MY99/00 might give out: e.g. MAF failure etc....

So, you should really get a P1 remapped to uk fuel? Or would that not help?

some pop at low miles aswell but most seem to go, after being held at high speeds for some time

some things why it happends

held high speeds
wrong oil, with high oil temps
faulty maf
wrong fuel, i always use octane booster
decat ect without remap
never given time to warm up

I would! I'd also avoid running without a remap for any length of time with, exhaust changes, especially the DP, or any other mods for that matter.

I'd also get a kn(c)ocklink to watch out for det caused by fuel or the infamous MAF.

Then of course there is the usual stuff you can do to keep your engine healthy

-Warm up
-Cool down
-No sustained Vmax runs
-Don't bounce it off the limiter everywhere!
-Use the right oil- best you can afford
-Keep an eye on the oil levels
-Use decent petrol
-Don't flog the car when the petrol guage shows low

etc..... etc....
