I got in touch with the place i bought them from and they insist i have the right ones.

Sorry, I've not had chance to get any photos done - work has been a mare this week. I'll try to explain the best I can...
Assuming they are the same as mine, I've got Thule feet for a MY97 UK classic, as you look at them, hanging just below the rubber protectors (the bit that sits on the car roof) there is a metal plate that is hooked at the bottom.
Now, on the car you have the main roof, a black plastic strip, then more painted roof as it comes to meet the side windows. Between this bit of the roof and the windows, there is a black strip, which if you run your fingers along the under side edge, you will feel its not very thick.
To fit the roof bars, or at least mine, is a simple case of sitting the foot (on the side which does not tighten up) on the edge of the roof with the hooked plate pushed under this strip. Walk around the car, and position the foot on the roof and move the metal plate so that the hook is under the strip again. Now tighten the roof bars. If you struggle to get the hooks under the strips, especially the second one, you may need to loosen the bars first.
Hope this makes sense and is useful, give me a shout if not..

ok mate i have had a look. just a couple more questions, does the metal pieces that hold the whole thing on the car have hooked ends on yours? and also once the rack is on does it clear the window ok when opening and closing the door?

When you say "the metal pieces that hold the whole thing on the car have hooked ends", I am assuming you are meaning the metal plates on the ends of the roof rack, in which case, yes, the bottom of them is hooked. The hook needs to go behind the black strip.
Yes, you can open and close the doors with no problems with the glass.
Not anywhere newar Nottingham are you?
