Default Air Filter / Dump Valve Or NOT?

Hey guys, I've bought a new HKS Air filter and SS BOV/DV at a cost of almost £500. I've been reading a bit on here and i've also had some advice from a friend who has been rebuilding and racing impreza's for years and he said the standard Subaru air filter is better. The reason behind this he said is because after market air filters allow the turbo to heatup. How true this is Im unsure of..

The HKS dump valve is another matter.. opinions?

Im running stock Boost on a 1993 WRX Import, I have to be honest im kinda sad and want the noise the dump valve makes

You'll probably get slated on here for using a BOV/DV, but i must admit to having a couple on previous cars, because i liked the noise too.

I don't know about the turbo heating up. But with an induction kit you will need to replace the MAF regulary. I ended up with a rebuild when i put an induction kit on my classic, so never again for me. Most cars will only need a high-flow panel filter, something like K&N/Green.

You wont need to worry about the MAF on a '93. Its the MY99/00 ones that are weak.

Normal induction kits can suffer from heat soak. Filter gets warm with all the heat under the bonnet. You can make your own 'cold area' around the filter.

£500 and you have been seriously had. Buy used and you would have both items for under £200

if your using a non oiled filter / induction kit such as a Quikshift racing one then it wont damage the MAF , oiled filters do this as a small amount of oil gradually coats the MAF element causing it to funk up !
The BOV although considered chav by somew does serve a decent purpose , HKS is a good type of BOV too , where as their induction kit isnt so good IMHO , the worst thing about them is their ridiculously overpriced ! 500 quid for a induction kit and BOV ! you should be able to have change from 175 if you d shopped around , unless its a question of brand snobbery ?

as gazthehat said there are a lot of people who will slate you for having a vta but obviously its their opinion and its not their car so do what you want.
I've got a my93 wrx and yes I love the increased noise of the turbo spooling up and the ptoosh of the vta going off if people have a problem tough.
But £500 for a vta and filter is way too much if you need to buy bits for your car check the for sale section on here or ebay.

Made a huge typo, the HKS BOV was £240 - £40 less than online retail shops. The HKS Green Mushroom thingie was £140. So £380 altogether, dunno why I put 500.

Thanks for opinions guys, Im getting it rolling roaded on thursday in Norwich for a diagnostics test. If its less than 220BHP Im taking all that exspensive crap off

I've read about the Valve in the HKS BOV, and the way it works seemed like the best option if I was going to do it at all...

{EDIT}

Bought the bits on EBay and recived 2 free HKS badges worth £19.99 lol

£500!!??!

Thank **** it was a typo.

Mind, £70 for a filter. And stick with the stock BOV...it works perfectly fine

And filter won't make your turbo heat up LMAO

There are valid applications for after-market VTA and re-circ valves; but this probably isnt one. Id stick with the OEM re-circ BOV if I were you.
