http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/cherish.htm

If you want to take the plate off and retain it on paper, then it will cost £105. £25 to retain it, and £80 transfer fee.

If you want to move it directly to another car, then it will be £80, as you don't need the £25 retention fee.

The car you are taking the plate off, will normally be assigned the plate it had previously.

It's relatively simple if long winded..!

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/cherish.htm

Look at 'retention' and it lists what forms you need to submit..

Hope this helps..?

Not unless it was requested to be retained at original swap. Usually original plates can only be retained and then re-assigned if a special request is made such as the car has etched windows bearing the original plate details, otherwise it gets issued a new plate.

Not necessarily so.

FWIW, I've just done this VERY long-winded procedure.

Was told by DVLA Worcester that where at all possible, the orginal plate will be re-issued.

I've done it in an hour in person 2 weeks by post. Every car I've had on my plate has gone back on original plate when I've sold them on

I believe they no longer do the 'while you wait' service at the local DVLA offices, so it's a postal job. Was for me last time round, and yep, as above always gone back on the original plates for me to.

They don't do the 'while-you-wait' any more as I found out last Tuesday. Has anyone done this recently? How long did it take for the notification of the new reg plate and tax disc to come through? I'm on working day 5 and no sign. I know the V5 can take up to 4 weeks.

Had the original registration put back on 4 cars now without any special request being made. Seems automatic to me as long as the number is still available.

I waited the last two times. Average 2 hour wait before being seen in Maidstone.

Gonna do it by post next time.

It is true, they have definatly stopped doing the "drive thru" service. You have to do it by post now, or attend local office to hand in papers, and they will forward to Swansea. They told me up to 6 weeks!! YOU WHAT??? my new car is waiting for me, but within 7 working days the docs had arrived. All my cars have had there ORIGINAL plate re-issued, without me asking.

Proby.

Did mine a few weeks ago.

New tax disc & Plate took 2 weeks
V5 took 4 weeks
Retention certificate took 4.5 weeks.

I have now changed my mind, and want to keep the car (depreciation in first year is too much of a hit to take) so I'll be sticking my own plate back on it again in a month or so. £156 in total for nothing...... D'oh
