You should really be looking at a remap, i use a scott taylor chip in my type ra. At a minimum you should be using optimax and millers octane booster.

Before mine was remapoped (Steve Simpson @ Tegsport) I was running Optimax with octane booster.
Now remapped I run Optimax only
You defo need an octane booster if you havent remapped it otherwise you are looking at a new bottom end rebuild following detonation if you over-use the loud pedal - as I did

I would disagree and say that an A-Series WRX (which is all it is) will probably run perfectly well on Esso super unleaded or Optimax. To be sure fit a properly adjusted Knocklink and keep your eye on it.
Its an ignorantly perpetuated myth that these cars were designed to run on 100RON fuel (I saw a gob****e describe it a 105RON a few days ago here!); this simply isn true. '100RON Premium Unleaded' wasnt available in Japan when this car was made.....

slightly of topic, here but how the heck do you find out what your mapping is set for, i recently purchased a my00 ra and are running it on optimax, as far as far as i know its running just fine, the dealer said optimax or ultimate only but i am getting paranoid now reading through various sites about bottom ends going, engines blowing up etc etc... I really dont think i can run the car if i have to start putting in OB along with optimax, i know you will all say its a lot cheaper than an engine rebuild i appreciate that but as far as running costs for the next few years i would rather keep them down as much as possible.
I have no reason to be paranoid about mapping of car but is it obvious if your using the wrong fuel ?
Can you find out the mapping of car somehow ?

Ive only used octane booster once, that was in the P1 in ireland where nobody around sold anything other than NUL or diesel. Never had a remap or a Cocklink either

On your MY00 car, unless its been ECU-TEKd then it will be set up to run on 100RON fuel. Even the later Classic ECUs like this arent brilliant at dealing with pre-ignition (despite pslewis telling you that electricity runs at the speed of light..., their firmware is ****e) If I were you Id consider an ECU-TEK remap or maybe an A'PEXi PowerFC. There will be many circumstances in which the ECU cant retard enough (or quickly enough!,) to prevent pre-ignition caused by the inadequate fuel.
