Red Top Engine
quick questions chaps....Ive seen a few V3 + scoobys and some of them dont have red top engines...
any particular reason for why this might be? i can appreciate it may flake off so do people just go all out n remove it or?
is it worth concerning ones self when looking at a V3 + that the manifold isnt red?

Beware WRXs dressed up as STIs.
As far as I am aware all Version 3 and onwards STIs should have the red top. Its only some of the Version 2s and earlier that dont have it.
I cant see people going to the hassle of removing the paint and leaving it at that. If you're going to remove it all (and i mean every flake) they would surely have to remove the intake manifold. once its off, you may as well paint it again

Maybe its a GC8*27D? Thats a 2 door Type-RA, although Subaru didnt describe it as such. 2/47D is the AMN for Type-RA cars; the 27D was marketed as a WRX Type-R VLimited. The Applied Model Number on the build plate will reveal all; whether the ****-poor quality red manifold paint has lasted is neither here nor there.

Hence the ownwer is quoting:
Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS), Driver Airbag, Immobiliser, Passenger Airbag, Rear seat belts, Safety Belt Pretensioners
But no dccd or waterspray etc.
There is also NO mention of STI in the wording.
BUT, you are right that it does have the Silver intercooler (This could be genuine or a black one sprayed up and it does have the STI seats and strut brace.
In my opinion its still not a bad buy, depending on what you intend to do with it.

i was referring to a lack of red in 'red top engines' a bit more generally..its just that i remember i saw this one and it had no red top amongst a few other ones ive seen....nust used it as an example
on a side note spoke to this chap already hes asking a tidy price but claims an engine rebuild but has no receipt to back it up so i wont be buying it.
but as some1 above agreed the best way is the model code....
on a similar note ive seen a number of V3 onwards that dont have the red n white clear lights...odd or not?

From what iv seen 90% of so called sti`s on ebay look very dubious.

No; the Applied Model Code is the only way to be certain of what model a car is. The engine code applies only to the engine, which is easily changed.

There are tons of wrx's pretending to be sti's on ebay.
Obvious ways to tell as mentioned before are alloy intercooler, red-top, seats, calipers and clear rear indicators occasionally all of these are changed for sti parts though on a WRX.
The one I have never seen changed (though it would be stupidly easy to do so and I'm sure there are many out there with the mod) is the rev gauge - will redline at 7000 on a WRX and 8000 on an sti (dangerous thing to change just for cosmetics). Though in this case I don't think it will help because I believe the RA's had an 8000 redline also.
Bottom line - always check the model numbers.

Rev counter is also a way of telling, STI's have a higher redline but it varys between engine phases so you need to know what the differences are.

I just assumed after seeing a few that they all redlined at 8000.
