1400 miles in 2 days
Just a quick note to all our Highlanders.
You are the jammiest people - what fantastic empty roads you have all to yourselves
Drove up to Elgin on Sunday and came back via Fort William. Did a couple of hundred miles while I was up there too. The roads around Elgin/Inverness were deserted, had fantastic scenery and no speed cameras!
The drive from Inverness round Loch Ness down to Fort William was spectacular and plenty of overtaking spots for those pesky caravans.
All in all some of the best driving i've done on this fair island of ours.
Highly recommend a trip this time of year, if you keep an eye on the weather you're guaranteed a top trip

Have to add a small disclaimer, don't go there in the summer. Seems to me the place is set up for a tourist invasion like the ones that turn the Lake District into a caravan traffic snarl up nightmare in the summer months

No guarantees, but I believe statistically May is the driest, sunniest month in Scotland.

The A82 from Inverness to Crianlarich via Fort William is a superb road. Be warned - no fixed cameras, but the Feds do lurk at various locations on the road - outside Bridge of Orchy is a favourite

But it has lots of cameras, caravans, Tesco artics doing 40 mph exactly, and plenty of wan$ers who overtake in the most horrendous positions
Without driving like a **** I can easily get from Stirling to Inverness up the A9 in about two and a half hours. I always seem to catch up with the lunatic overtakers north of Aviemore where the road is quieter

Theres a great road from the A9 to Elgin, cant remeber the number tho.
Turn off A9 at the Carrbridge turn off, turn left at T junction and then take first left at small junction on r/h bend. Follow this road straight across the moors to Elgin.
Fantastic bit of country for a blast.
Jamiemiller once posted on here about the road, look for his post and you will get the road number.

Since the introduction of all the cameras and the enforcement of the 40mph limit for HGVs I believe the A9 is now being billed as "the most dangerous road in Scotland" and a high proportion of the accidents are head on collisions during overtaking. From one of the fastest and safest roads in the UK to one of the slowest and most dangerous in one simple step.

To answer another comment the road between Avimore and Elgin via Rothes is excellent, The A9 from Aviemore to perth has 3 speed camera in each direction and vans are out there sometimes. So keep your eyes peeled and have fun.

Harvester at Inverness to Ski slope in Edinburgh in that time, could have been less 'theoretically'... One camera would needed to have been highlighted by oncoming helpfull drivers. It would have had to have been a fast average speed. A best drive to rival a good lap of the 'Ring with little traffic, even?
