ECU reset, what does this do??
#1
There's always lots of talk about re-setting the ECU.
My questions are:
What does this do?
When would you do this?
Is it safe?
Is it ok to do on a car with PPP?
Cheers,
Chris

No problem
I recently did it by default. My RA's engine decided to let go one day and the battery was disconnected for about 8 weeks whilst the engine was re-built. I guess it is now optimised for running on Super (97).

DJB, Sorry to but in, but if i was to start using Super unleaded 97 in my MY97 Catalunya, would i have to reset the ECU. Recently purchased the car & the previous owner just ran premium unleaded 95. Cheers from a new uneducated scooby owner!

Just got mine reset after the 45000 service.....
Was told that it puts the engine into learning mode for about 20mins.
Basically your style of driving over the next 20mins is how the car will (by default) be happiest running at....
If you drive like an old man then the car will be crap....
I said "so I have to thrash the bollox off it for 20 mins and then it will be looser and earier revving etc..." they said "Yes"....
So thats what I did.... never over 3rd gear, only small fast roads (no motorway cruising), 3 days later..... runs great (wife keeps telling me off for driving so fast ) it just wants to (or seems to want to) run quicker.....

Yes, you will need to reset the ECU to get any benefit from SUL. Cars made before MY99 have an ECU which is slow to adjust to better fuel. You would need to run SUL exclusively for several tankfuls to allow the ECU to adjust and improve performance so its much quicker to reset the ECU. Make sure before you do this that the fuel tank and fuel lines contain only SUL and not a 50:50 mix. I would suggest running the tank very low and then filling with SUL to reduce dilution of the good stuff. You will have to drive it for a few miles to remove the NUL from the fuel lines before you reset.
Another point, once you've reset the ECU if you use NUL once, you'll be right back to where you started.
