Shorter No.plate without changing lettering?
I have seen a private plate which I am interested in buying. I am not going to alter the font size or the gaps between letters & numbers to make it read something else, I am quite happy with it as it is. The only thing I would like to do is reduce the size of plate, as the digits are more central to the plate that leaves a large margin either side. Its the margin that I want to reduce, only on the front plate, as I think it will help me in the near furture when the fmic is fitted.
Is this legal considering I will not alter the numbering, fonts, gaps between letter etc.
Forgot to add that the new plate has only 5 digits.

It certainly used to be and if the vehicle was originally registered on a 2001 Y or before then it would have been quite acceptable to use a shorter plate as long as the spacing was correct. Whether this is still the case, with the revised registration plate requirements, Im not sure.

Having read the new regulations they still only refer to character size and spacing. So; as long as theres a 33mm space between groups and an 11mm space (between characters and) before the first character and after the last character then the plate will be legal.

I have just read it too?
link copied & pasted:
The British Standard sets out the physical characteristics on the number plate. This includes:
Visibility
Strength
Reflectivity
The British Standard also requires that a number plate must be marked with the following information: -
The British Standard Number (currently BS AU 145d)
The name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier. (The company who actually make the number plate.)
The name and postcode of the supplying outlet. (The 'supplying outlet' is taken to mean a company whose business consists wholly or partly of selling number plates.)
A non-reflective border and the Euro-symbol with the national identification letters are optional additions.
There shall be no other markings or material contained on the number plate.
I have 2 cars in my household and I have just checked the front plate.
Both cars do not have the BS AU 145d marked on the front number plate, so I guessed these may have been changed by the previous owners.
Where is the BS AU 145d normally positioned/ marked on the front plate?

If you order a Euro style plate the letters are pushed towards the right hand side, where the BS AU 145D is usually placed, along the lower edge of the plate.
These plates also use the smaller font size, so when you trim it, removing the Euro logo to leave 11mm minimum border at each end of the plate, you end up with the smallest 'legal' size plate you can use.
