Brake Pads
I have recently had my scooby serviced (10,0000 miles) and was told that i only had a 1000 miles left , bearing in mind my car is only nearly 6 months old.
How many miles should I get from an OEM brake pads?
Just in case you was wondering I had done 10,175miles at time of service.

Sounds like they were trying to get a bit of work out of you , unless you are very hard on your brakes

Expected miles for brake pad is 99% down to driving style. It is quite possible to get less than 10K out of pads.
Empty Motorways = very little brake wear.
Town and A-road driving = more brake wear
Driving like a loon on the lanes = Lots of brake wear

do they squeel???
if so, they will need chanding.
Do they fade very quickly under spirited use, if so, they need changing.
they will cost a small fortune at the dealer, you can buy the exact same pads from Andrew Paige parts supplies for about £70 for the fronts

We had our MY03 scooby mot'd on saturday. It has nearly 24,000 miles on the clock and they advised we should put new break pads on. They said there was only about 2mm left and it would have failed with less than 1.5mm

You'll know when they're down to the minimum as the scraping noise they make due to the metal clip wear indicators that come into contact with the disc bell is irritating as ****. Very easy DIY job to save yourself a few quid, requiring just the wheel removed and a pair of adjustable pliers. Remove wire clip, slide out retaining pins, use adj. pliers to push pistons back (remembering to have previously removed the brake fluid res cap) with the old pad surface, slide out old, slide in new (with a layer of copper slip on the back), replace pins, replace wire clip, replace wheel. Can highly recommend Ferodo DS2000 and Mintex 1144 as an alternative to the OE rubbish, also well worth the cash but much more expensive is Pagid Black RS4.2.1. DO NOT even consider EBC Reds, as they're made of butter and last about 3 months.
Well, I think I am now on 66,000miles with the original brake pads and discs all round ................... I used to get concerned that something was wrong, but, I have come to the conclusion that I can drive properly!
Idiots who drive around like a 'Make-Believe Rally Drivers' are eating them up in less than 70,000miles!!

Well, I am living proof that 67,000miles + is achievable.
I think they need replacing, though ..... there is a very quiet scraping noise now when I turn the wheels one way or another.
My concern is how difficult it will be to get the pins out and the discs off - after 6 years of life on the road!?

John - EVOLUTION,
The spring clips are dealer only unfortunately. Mine had been replaced with a couple of split pins so i'm waiting for new ones from the dealers now.
Have a look at my thread over on Surrey Scoobies for more info

pete, the money you have saved on not replacing them, just take them to the dealer, sounds like you have got between 5 and 7 times more life than most lol,
where can the OE pads be bought for £30, i have found pads for cheaper than £30, but they are not the OE, they were buttersilk or something. Local parts place assured me they were as good as the OE ones, for £21 i had some doubts.
